I wish i could help,it looks as if you have a job on there Ewan,
I see you have put Tanworth on there, I live in Redditch not to far away from Tanworth,it is a small village if you don,t know it, not a very big one either but they all have parish records..good luck with your quest.
regards dereklcg.

Thanks derecklcg for your comment, I do have parish records of this family but cannot see how they would confirm whether the Thomas and the William Cox are the same ones as I have mentioned in the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses.

Can tell you that William Cox married Ann Cox Nossiter,Solihull ~Sept 1864
ref. 6d 646 she was born in Bickenhill in 1842. Marriage certificate will have info on Williams father.

well i think definitely YES. it seems they were already doing well in their profession in 1861 as it said ...manufacturer.. whereas normally it is just brass worker or umbrella maker, etc. the ages are also spot on.

Thank you once again for your help shera, I will have to employ you as my genealogist (I certainly need one);)

It did look like it was the same individuals to me, but I really wanted a second opinion. Incidentally, shera, you kindly found the William and Thomas Cox for me on the 1851, don't know if you remember, they were at a school in Shoreham Sussex. On the 1861 the parents were living at another address while the 2 boys/men were living at another address with some of their siblings.

Thank you also Alberta for finding the marriage entry for a William Cox and an Ann. This is evidence that this is not my one and only family from Birmingham, the only thing I have on my ancestor is a marriage in 1877 and him on the 1881 and 1891 census with his wife and family.

Although this family have not turned out to be who I was looking for, it is a huge relief to have confirmed this. As their son was baptised without a middle name, my ancestor has a middle name as shown on census and marriage information, and I was not able to get my head around this fact that the son of this family (if it had been my ancestor) was baptised with just one name and then suddenly acquired a middle name, as was my ancestor.

Thank you both very much for your help.

thanks ewan, your william and thomas cox certainly did well for themselves, obviously a very industrious family. i do remember finding them at the school in shoreham. have you tried to find any records from the school, that would be really interesting. it must have set them up for the future anyway. :)

The William and Thomas Cox did do well for themselves, I have followed this family (parents and siblings) around on censuses also a sibling of the dad of William and Thomas Cox and the strange thing is they either died young before marrying, died young anyway or did not marry and lived into their 50s and 60s.

Due to the census information earlier on in this thread and your comments along with derecks I made a decision that this was not my family of Coxes, so I have not pursued the school in Shoreham route.

Thank you so much for your interest and help, as for me it is back to the little 'ole' drawing board.
