Help! Dayus/Hughes families

Hi Everyone,

I'm researching my mother's side of the family. My great grand father George Dayus born in 1855 (an easy name to research) can be traced back to the 1881 census; but beyond that there is nothing! This record shows that he was born in Worcester, so he is not an immigrant.

My other GG father Edward Hughes born 1842 in Warwickshire can be traced back to the 1871 census. Prior to that I cannot find an Edward Hughes who was born in Warks.

Can anyone advise how to progress this?

Cheers

Paul

there is a george dayus in the 1871 census as follows..

william dayus 40 boat man b. worcester
sarah 32
george 14 boatboy
joseph 2 all born worcester.

could this be the one?

chris

there are two edward hughes in 1861 both born and living bham.

edward hughes b. 1842 son of john 41 and sarah 37 with 5 other brothers and sisters

or

edward hughes b. 1841 son of edward 47 and eliza 48 with 2 siblings.

do you know parents names?

chris

Hi Chris,
What resource are you using? I'm using findmypast.com, which isn't yielding these results. I think I should try yours.

I'm working backwards from the 1901 census. Dayus should be easy as it's a very rare name. The Hughes side is OK with the correlation of other family members; but looking at records before he was married I'm trying to use age and location to pinpoint him. Presumably, I need to obtain wedding certificates where the parents' names and maiden names will be recorded.

The records you have given me look very promising, so if you let me know where to go I'll try that. Thank you for your help!

Cheers

hello paul. it is ancestry i am using. i had a subscription to findmypast last year but have not renewed it as ancestry is much better.

yes if you can get marriage certs that would be great as you would have mothers maiden name and fathers names. may also give ages.

let us know all details and we will look for marriage or birth.

Hi Chris,

Theses are my 2 last records:

1871
back of Willis St Aston

Edward Hughes 29years Born 1842 Born Warks
Clara Hughes 29 1842 Warks
William Hughes 5 1866 Warks
Emily Hughes 3 1868 Warks
Edward Hughes 1 1870 warks

1881
7 ct 2 Hs Bracebridge St Aston

George Dayus 26 1855 Dudley (worcs)
Emma Dayus 24 1857 B'ham

Can I just turn up at the Registry Office and get the certificates? I don't live in B'ham but I'm coming up shortly.

Many thanks,

Paul

you will need to find the marriages.

ive found the one for edward hughes which is probably right

you can order cert on line from bham register office with those details.

cant find the dayus marriage yet. will keep trying and maybe someone else will have a look too. (ive got to go to work soon)

chris

really sorry must have been rushing.

the details are 1863 oct -dec aston 6d 511

sorry for the mistake chris

Helo Paul, are you related to Kathleen Dayus. So many of us are fans of hers after reading her lovely books. So much history of her family in the early to mid 20th Century.:)

i have managed to find a marriage of a george dayus or dayns to an emma thirlby in 1875 oct-dec birmingham 6d 70

i hope this is the right one. it seems strange they had no children in 1881.

it is also listed on the igi records as 28.11.1875 at bishops ryder bham

Hi Di.Poppitt,
I’m afraid my skills as a genealogist are very limited. I think if you query the 1901 census entering the name “Dayus” there are relatively few results – so I suspect that all of those Dayus’s are related – to some extent.

Although I am familiar with the name Kathleen Dayus I’ve not read any of her books – can you recommend a title? I’ve many “picture books” about old B’ham – and yearn for the old days – until I remember I now have central heating and hot running water!!

Cheers

Paul
