In 1933 no.1 was a grocers run by Miss Jennings. Mary Heap was still there in 1936-1940, but by 1943 it was a drapers run by Walter Knatresse. Incidentally there is also a Florence Heap, originally described a milliner, but later as gown specialist, also in the directory.don;t know if she is related.

Thanks mike,
This gets better and better, you wouldn't believe this but walter "Knattress" which is the correct spelling of his name is related to Mary Jane. He is infact Mary Jane's son's (My Paternal Grandfather's) wife's (my Grandmother's) Uncle on her father's side. I have Found him on the 1911 census as a shop keeper of confectionery at 423 Alum Rock road but didn't have a clue what happened to him after. Thank you, this is amazing information. Do you know how long he had the shop for or is he or other members of the family are listed anywhere else in the directories at possibly a different address I would love to find out. Also can you tell me what kind of other shops were in that row of shops in Winnington road/Drews Lane area at the same time as my ancestors.

In answer to Florence Heap she is indeed related she is a cousin on my great grandfathers side. could I please ask the address of her business. You have and are being so helpful Mike and I am so very thankful. I not only enjoy researching my family tree ,I also like to find out about the history of the area's in which they lived and the types of buildings and business's that were around during there time. I am a avid Birmingham historian and love to read the threads on this site. Birmingham is a fantastic city with a fabulous history.

thanks again for all you help

I almost didn’t put in who the shop was afterwards. I do go overboard with information sometimes , and probably bore people !!, but did include it anyway.

Remember the dates are all the dates of publication, and refer to year before.
Walter was still there in 1944. but by 1949 it was:
Knattress , Mrs. Mary Adelaide, café
She was still running the café till at least 1956, but by 1964 the café was run by a Mrs E,Cooper.
Knattress not mentioned before 1949

With regard to Florence (no mention 1940) going backwards:
1932 and 1933
Heap Florence (Miss), gown specialist, 95 Alcester rd.Moseley. T N South 1,541
1921
Heap Florence (Miss), milliner, 144A,' Alcester rd. Moseley & 31A, Horse fair
1913 – no mention

Hope that’s useful
Mike

Thanks Mike,

Trust me you can never over do it with information, I am a sponge and take it all in. The shop really did seem to be a family affair didn't it.. Did you find out who else ran the others shops in the row. I have a photo of a hairdresser which I was told was next door to Mary Janes shop. the hairdressers was called N. stanfords but I'm not sure who she was or what number address it was at, or how long she was there for?

with thanks Mike

The Birmingham electoral roll (only up to 1939 online so far) has, in 1935:
Maryane (see later) Heap, Edward Heap, and William Edward Heap at 1, Winnington Road;
in 1939 it has:
Edward-f-J Heap (is that fitz-John??), Mary Jane Heap (so I think 'Maryane' in 1935 is a misprint), and William Edward Heap at 1, Winnington Road.

There isn't a 1930 listing for the address, so did they move there from new? Is it the corner shop at the junction with Drews Lane, opposite the Wolseley car works?

Sorry Lisa, there don't seem to be any other shops listed, at least for the period you're interested in. Doesn't mean there wern't any, but probably so small that they didn't think it worth while being included. In fact this seems to be the only building listed, no private houses.
Mike
