I dont know if anyone can help? but i'll give it a try that someone out there might be able to!
The problem is my husbands family tree, we are trying to find out more information regarding

Luke Haywood b abt 1740
d 1783 Cardington Bedfordshire
first spouse m 1769 Berwick upon Tweed Mary Sanderson
second sp. m 1776 Fort George Scotland Jane

He was a soldier then turned Baptist Minister.

We would love to know more of his past / parents etc.

A cousin has found us via Ancestry & is writing a book on the history of Haywood's so we are desperately
trying to find all the info we can.

Thanks to anyone who can help, fingers crossed.

I have just joined the forum and noticed your message about Luke Haywood. He was my x5 great-grandfather. My mother's maiden name was Haywood, and she was descended via this Luke's grandson, Luke Henry, who was born in Gloucestershire but then moved to Bham in the mid-1850s. For many years I in fact couldn't get my line back further than Luke Henry, but then a couple of years ago, by a combination of a bit of sleuthing and good luck, I managed to identify his father as James Haywood, who in turn was the son of Luke Haywood, the soldier than baptist preacher in Bedford.

That said, I cannot really help with the Luke Haywood b. 1740. You have no doubt seen the information on him on the web by Peter Haywood. I have tried the usual sources to find more about him, such as where he was born, or if there were any offspring from his first marraige (and what happened to Mary) but with no luck.

Who is the cousin writing a book about the Haywoods? I have a stack of information about the family, which I could provide - for both the line descended from James (via Gloucestershire then Bham) and that from Luke's son Luke (they don't seem to have been very imaginative when it came to names!) who mostly stayed in the area north of London.

Hello Chris, Thanks for getting in touch & for the info. I've pasted a reply we had back from Peter Haywood, some of the info might be of use to you. It seems that my husband (the haywood) & yourself might be related then. All the very best Jeanette
Many thanks to you both for letting me view the tree, which I am comparing with my own to see if we can assist each other.

One branch which I can add for you concerns the entry that you have for LUKE HAYWOOD (1813) and MARY ANN being descended from WILLIAM HINTON (1776)and MARY HAYWOOD (1782).

This should actually read:

LUKE HAYWOOD Born about 1740 married JANE ? at Fort George, Scotland 1776.

They had 4 children:
EBENEZER. Born 27/11/1777 Watford, Herts
JAMES Born 23/3/1779 Watford, Herts
LUKE Born 23/9/1780 Watford, Herts
ELIZABETH Born 16/3/1783 Cardington, Beds.

JAMES (above) married REBECCA SHARP (Born 15/8/1784 Hoggeston, Bucks) on the 27/5/1805 at St Mary de Lode Church, Gloucester.

They had 6 children:
LUKE HENRY Born 1812 Gloucester
BENJAMIN Born 1814 Gloucester
FRANCIS (FANNY) Born 1816 Gloucester
SUSAN Born 1819 Gloucester
JOHN Born 1821 Cheltenham
EDWIN HENRY Born 1824 Cheltenham

LUKE HENRY (above) married MARY ANN CLARIDGE (Born about 1810 Stowe, Stroud or Oddington) on the 12/2/1832 at St Mary's Church, Cheltenham.

They had 9 children: All born Cheltenham.
REBECCA Born 1835
JAMES Born 1837
BENJAMIN Born 1840
FRANCIS (FRANK) Born 1842
CHARLES REUBEN Born 1844
SARAH Born 1847
EDWIN HENRY Born 1851
SAUL Born ?
EMMA Born ?

Rather than clutter things up I have not added any marriage details or dates of death etc for any of the above but can let you have any of these that I have if you let me know.

If you put in on your search engine "The soldier of Fort George" this will bring up an article on Luke Haywood. I also have a copy of the 22 pages from the Watford Church diary from the 1700's regarding him.

Best wishes
Peter
