Hi looking for information on my great uncle j w hartland, think he might have been a undertaker.

In harbourne area.

Re: john w hartland 1895

The only undertaker listed in Harborne in the 1896 Kellys (which actually refers to 1895) is Thomas Bramich Millward, 17 Bull St ,Harborne. There is no undertaker named Hartland, and the only John Hartlands listed in the commercial section are a furniture remover in Bath row and a John Francis Hartland, architect and surveyor, 11 Martineau st. possibly he worked for Millwards

Re: john w hartland 1895

Hello,Thanks for reply...quite exciting....John F Hartland was my Great Grand father, & Father to john W Hartland.

Could you let me know what the list says for John F Hartland Architect!

I know he was a architect but been unable to find more information.

THANKS mike :):)

Re: john w hartland 1895

Not much more available. In 1896 no 11 Martineau st was occupied by 6 firms, so it wasn't an enormous office. He was no longer there in 1904 kellys (that is really 1903). He was there in 1892, but not in 1888 kellys. In 1896 he was also listed (I assume it's the same one) in the "court" section of the directory. This is like a private address section, but probably only included those doing very well for themselves. He was no longer listed privately in 1904, and was not listed privately in 1888 or 1892. There are several other Hartlands listed in the commercial sections if any other christian names have an interest. Hartland seems to have possibly come from the black country, as there are a number of them in the 1880 and 1904 directories (mainly from tipton or wolverhampton areas), including a couple of johns and one . Heywood Hartwood, who was an alderman in west Bromwich.
hope this is of interest.

Re: john w hartland 1895

Electoral rolls give a few Hartlands, In 1912 John Francis Hartland was in Station Road Harborne (sorry no number given), whilst in 1920 John Wilson Hartland, John Francis Hartland, Arthur Horatio Hartland, Francis Victor Hartland, and Julia Hartland were at 12 Emerson Road Harborne. 1925 sees the following Hartlands at the same address: John Wilson; Julia; Francis Victor; Robert; and Leslie Cecil.
In 1930 John Wilson and Emma are at 7 Picton Grove Sparkhill, but in 1935 and 1939 they are at 23 Beech Avenue Harborne

Re: john w hartland 1895

And here they are in the 1901 census, the head of the household at 11 Regent Road Harborne being 31 year old John F Hartland, an Architect's clerk.

Re: john w hartland 1895

Hi Mike,Thanks so much for the info.

My Hartlands are from Shropshire Owestery and seem's that a number of John F brother's, were also architect..surveyors. or clerks.

I know John F did rather well for a time, but then something went very wrong. Which came to a climax in 1920 with him taking his own life, at Harbourne station. & then 6 weeks after that Aruther died from his injuries from WW1.

Re: john w hartland 1895

Lloyd thanks so much for info on John W Hartland.:) I have been trying to find out more about him for a while, I assumed he had married but know no more.

By 1925 both J F hartland (Father) & Aruther (Son) had passed away.

Re: john w hartland 1895

In 1871 John Hartland 26 his wife Margaret 23 were still in Oswestry, living in Beatrice Street with their children Martha 3 and John 1. John is a Bricksetter and says he was born in Gloucester, Forthampton

In the 50's there was a firm of estate agents in the area of Harborne named Hartland and Tydd, I went out a couple of times with John Tydd.

Re: john w hartland 1895

In 1956 the firm in harborne was Hartland (C.W), Tidd & Co . 139 high Street. In the 1950 directory they were not there, but there was a Charles Harold Hartland, estate agent, at 80, Metchley Lane, which is not that far away, but not central like the high st.

Re: john w hartland 1895

Thanks Mike for confirming the Estate Agents, it was another life time ago but some things do stay in the memory.:)

My name was Worrall before I became a Poppitt:) and I suspect that Emma Worrall could possibly be one of my relatives, but my Gt Grandfather and Gt Gt Grandfather had 15 sons between them and I have not researched them all.
