I am searching for info on my great Aunt who was born Rose Harrison to George Harrison and Rose Harrison.

I have looked on BMD and can find an entry for a Rose Harrison born on 5th April 1899 which I think could be the one and she possibly married JUL/AUG/SEP of 1919 as I have found an entry and her married surname would have been Fletcher.

I know from living family that she ran pubs for most of her life certainly right up into the late 60's anyway.

Is there anyway I can trace what pub/pubs she ran and if the Rose I have found is the right one??

Re: Rose Harrison born 1899 (Fletcher?)

Hi Paul

Found Rose (I think) on 1901 census (Ancestry).

Living with her parents, George and rose, both aged 26 at house 3, Court 52 Darwin Street, Aston. His occupation given as Art metal work (jardiner stands)

If this is the right one, she had a brother George age 7 and a sister Nellie age 6. Given the gap between Nellie and Rose, I bet there were others but they may not have survived.

Hope this helps
Helen

Re: Rose Harrison born 1899 (Fletcher?)

Hi Helen
Yes this is the family.
In the 1911 census they had 11 children that had been born to them and only 6 were surviving. I know that they had another child in 1916 called Ivy Irene (my nan).

Nellie doesnt exist on the census so I presume she died at an early age and is one of the 5 that had died.

I also know that in 1918 there were five children Rose (b1899) , William (b1904) Fred (b1906) Dolly (b1908) and Ivy (b1916)

There is a son called George on the census born in 1894 but I now know this was actually William George as he served in WW1 and is actually buried in Belgium.

it is becoming quite complicated to try and track but I am making some progress.

Is there anyway I can trace the pubs Rose may have run??

Well you could try the historical directories for Birmingham.

if you click on "today's posts" on the tool bar above and scroll down todays posts you will find a thread titled historical directories and there is a link there.

My lot were all Ag labs outside Brum and mostly metal workers or box makers in Brum so I don't know much about researching pubs. Bet someone else on this site does though!

Presumably the pub may be in her husbands name. Do you know his christian name?
Fletchers in licensed trade in kellys in 1932 are:
1932
Albert beer retailer 159 Montgomery st
Eli Walker, Hope & Anchor P.H. & Restaurant, 19 Edmund street.
John, Witton Arms P.H. 458 Witton rd. Witton
Thos. Fredk. Old Crown P.H. 188 & 189 High st.Deritend
William , Hen & Chickens P.H. 128 Moseley st

There is only a Mrs Rose fletcher, shopkeeper in the commercial side that year
Historical directories site only goes to about 1910. Shedd be a bit young then !
Can look at other years, but husbands name would help

Re: Rose Harrison born 1899 (Fletcher?)

Well I've had a quick look through the telephone directories on Ancestry. Couldn't find a publican called Fletcher listed in the Birmingham directory for 1960.

Found a W Fletcher, Publican at Castle Hotel, Alfreton in 1923 and a L Fletcher at the Jolly Farmer Inn Ruddington 1924.

Eyes and back aching so i'm giving up.....for now
