Harrison Jane

Ann Steiner

master brummie
I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to find the maiden name (and hopefully her parents’ names) of my Gr-great grandmother. What I know about her to this point is:

First name: Jane

Born: about 1852 in Birmingham/Warwickshire

Married: Edwin Harrison (born 1849) (Died possibly 1905?)

Marriage date: About 1872

Children: Martha Jane (born about 1872/73), Ellen (born about 1876), and Minnie (born 1881).

1881 census: living at 4 Rose Mount, Birmingham
1891 census: living at 14 Spring Street, Birmingham

Jane lived to be 95 years old. She died in 1947 and is buried in the Handsworth cemetery.

I think there were possibly two Edwin Harrison’s born in 1849. And to further complicate things, in the same time frame as my Gr-great grandmother, there was another married couple named Edwin and Jane Harrison. But that Jane was born in 1850, and they had two children, named William and Jane C.

Any help on this dead end would be much appreciated.

Ann

Re: Jane Harrison

Hello Ann, there is only one Martha Jane registered in Warwickshire between 1870 and 1875, and one Minnie in the time frame.

Martha Jane Harrison September Quarter 1872 ref Birmingham 6D 71

Minnie Harrison December Quarter 1880 ref Birmingham 6D 202

There are a few Ellen Harrisons who could be your Ellen.

The only way you can be sure of the correct family is to send for a birth certificate. If you are not familier with ordering a birth certificate, go to FreeBMD, put in a search for one of the above with the ref, you will be taken to the results page, follow the instructions for what to do after finidng a correct entry, and you can order on line.

I also did a search in Family Search and found a possible christening for Martha Jane, 2nd January 1873 at St Martin's church. If you request a look up in the St Martin's Church thread, one of the girls on here will tell you if there is any relevent info in the register.

The only marriage I can find for an Edwin Harrison is in Droitwich which is in Worcestershire where in June quarter 1873 he married Jane Willis. Worcestershire is close to Birmingham, so it could be a possibility.

Re: Jane Harrison

Di,

I’m not sure if the Edwin and Jane marriage in Worcestershire would be my line – if the marriage took place in June quarter 1873, and their first daughter Martha Jane was born in 1873….??? She either came along before expected (ahem), or it’s not the right Edwin and Jane Harrison. At any rate, it’s a lead to look into, and I will see if I can pursue that further. Thank you for providing it.

What else you may have uncovered, with the possible christening for Martha Jane, 2 January 1873, in St. Martin’s Church, could be of help as well. If that indeed turns out to be my great-grandmother, it will be the first official record of her birth that I will have. I will post a look up request, as you suggested, in that thread.

Thanks so much for your help and the time you spent looking this information up!

Best,
Ann
