See email below I sent to https://www.swintonharrison.co.uk/H/harrison/amy_harrison.php after stumbling across their website looking for an Amy Harrison.

Is there a Birmingham Bastardy register I can investigate to find more details on the possible father of Francis Henry Harrison?

Any help on this would be gratefully received as I'm no professional at this but since friends & realtives have realised I'm tracing my ancestors, they all want it looking into. Its hard to say no because I find it interesting and slightly addictive (sad I know)

Regards
Phil

I am trying to help an old friend find out his heritage, he has never tried until now because his grandfather (Francis Henry Harrison) was adopted and he thought he wouldn’t be able to find anything out. With the advent of the internet he is keen to see if someone can help and yes, I’ve go the job of helping.

Francis Henry Harrison (11th Dec 1900) was given up for adoption as soon as he was born by his mother Amy Harrison (66 Durham Road, Sparkhill, Yardley occupation Housekeeper). The Birth was witnessed (and registered) by a F. Halrig-Clifton (residence: 7 Benton Road, Sparkhill, Yardley) just a few doors down from your Beatrice Buxton (14 Benton Road, 1901 Census)

These event follow a similar pattern as your Swinton Harrison, but my Amy Harrison would have had to have left the Jackson residence in Great Alne to go to Yardley to have Francis Henry and then return straight away as she appears on Henry Jacksons 1901 census.

I can’t find my Amy Harrison in the 1901 census possibly because she moved out of the area?

I don’t know if Amy named the child or it was named for her, I don’t know how these things happed back then but Francis and Henry are the names of her last two employers. I’m not saying one of them is necessarily the father but if she was asked to think of a name!!

As the story has passed down Francis Henry was given up for adoption to Elizabeth Hipwood, this all adds up as I have found them on the 1901 census (although I think the age should read 3 months not 3 years) and Elizabeths correct address’s (23 Waterworks St, Aston) on the electoral rolls up to him marrying Galdys E Harris in 1924.

Sparkhill may be the key, why did your Amy end up there when she had Swinton in 1902, did she have to move away to have Henry Swintons Illegitimate child? Why Sparkhill, had she been there before 2 years earlier in similar circumstances.

I know its all circumstantial evidence but its feasible, all it needs is a rumour that your Amy had a child before Swinton and I think we have found our Amy.

Any comments for or against the argument would be greatly appreciated.
