Hanson Family - Aston/Billesley

Jayell

master brummie
My grandparents, William Thomas and Rose Hanson, lived in Gothic Terrace, Clifton Road, Aston before moving to Bromwall Road in Billesley in the 1920's. This is a photo of my auntie, Evelyn Hanson, taken about 1923, when she was 3 years old. Evelyn became head receptionist at the Grand Hotel in Colmore Row and was there for many years. Is there anyone out there with connection to the Hanson family. I am trying to find out more about William's brothers.

Do you have a date of birth for William and his brothers?
Can look for them an ancestry id born before 1901.

Hanson family

Thanks Mrs T for your kind offer of help, however, I do have information from all the censuses on the Hanson family, and have traced them back to 1797 in Birmingham. I am trying to see if I can make contact with any descendants of my granddad's brothers and sister, but so far have been unable to trace forwards. I can't wait for the 1911 census to become available!! Also I hear there may be basic info coming out in 2009.

My granddad was William Thomas Hanson, the youngest child, born in 1876. His sister Eliza, born 1865, married Joseph Greaves and had 5 children. His brother Samuel Sidney, born 1868, married Sarah Ann Lizzie Taylor and they had 6 children. Brother Frederick was born in 1871 but I don't know what happened to him, he might have died.

I was just hoping that perhaps someone else was researching my family. Again, thanks for your offer.

hi jayell
i see you are tracing hansons well i knew a hanson family very well and the father was a sidney hanson i cannot remember is wifes name for sure but any way this sid hanson was in the ta army he was an older chap i surpose for his age he was a cook in the army i beleive and i know he did have a brother whom lived in the aston area
because i went with him one night visting himhis brother but i cannot think of the name of the rd but any way this sid lived in aberdeen st winson grreen
it was next to collisis the tv people he had his wife 3 girls and one lad called norman
the girls was carol , shirley ,it may have been linda i beleive sid moved to some where in northfield and so did the girls one went to weoly castle married a green grocers son i am not sure wheror what happened to them i know they did get pregnant
and they live in that area the last imei seen them would have been in the 70,s
i can only presume sid as died he was a very nice guy i used to drink with him
at there house and we would go down to the smiths arms just along the rd
from his house to be quite honest i went out with his daughter and lived with them for a good while i am beging to think her name was annand i think she was from the scoucer land [dont hold me to that so i am thinking is it worth you checking the cencus roll for the period of the sixtys possibly 67,68 69 for hanson aberdeen st
winson green just beiong suggestive as you have come to the end of a trail
to see if he as any connection best wishes astonian ;;;;;;;

Hi Astonian

Thanks for that information. I don't know if the Hanson family you mention were my family, but there are several Sidneys in the family so it is possible. I know very little about this part of the family and I have only traced them a little way. I am hoping to check further when I get some credits for the 1911 census!!

I have a Sidney Hanson who was born in 1928, who had a brother Frank. I haven't done any more research on these brothers. Their parents were Vernon and Lily. This Sidney could be the one you mention, and I think it is definitely worth following up on.

Vernon also had a brother called Sidney born in 1899 who married a Nellie Massey (I think) in 1919. I don't know if they had any children.

After reading your message I think I should try and find out more, because there is a strong possibility that this could be my family. I will try and find out more about Aberdeen Street.

Thanks so much Astonian, every clue is worth following up. I will let you know if I come up with anything.

Judy

hi jayell
i hope you succeed in this research and i dearly hope you can bear fruit
sorry i could not remember the brothers name nor the adres also not knowing where sid came from before moving to aberdeen st winson green and also for the adress in northfield he later moved to it may be of intrest to look at an old street map of brum
to pin point this street his brother lived in it wasby the old costa green area of brum
i think the pub around the corner from him was the turks head
come along fromnew town pally and past baggot st onthe same side there was a very old street it was a dead end streetin fact it was a culdesac so with the old street guide of the 20,30, 44,50 ,it will be listed thats where the brother of sid lived i went there with him as i am typing i think it was on the old lady wood site
some where there was aanother hanson living in norman st down around the smiths arms as well but at the time years when i was looking i thought it might have been young norman hanson so i did not persue any way that checking of the culdi sac might also give you alead best of luck i will be intrested to hear of your progress
best wishes astonian ;;

Astonian - I'm getting really excited about the Hansons that you are talking about. I have my granddaughter coming this afternoon and staying overnight so will not be able to look into this much until after tomorrow, but I have got the Electoral Rolls for 1935/36 and just had a look at them, and Sid's parents Vernon John and Lily Hanson was living at 3 Sydenham Place in Ladywood. Does that ring any bells with you?

I think I shall have to get the next set of Electoral rolls which I think are 1945, and check out the addresses you have given me to see if Sid is shown or his brother Frank.

Will keep you posted :)

Judy

hi jay
yes i lived in ladywood at the time of courting is daughter of sids daughter
i was single and lived with them for a good lengh of time in aberdeen street
at this moment i am trying to place in my mind sydam place . but it will come back to me in a mo .i don,t want to build your hopes but i thinl one of the girls one day did jokingly call him sam and he made a remark the girl i could not remember was susan she was the youngest of the four kids he had [ so the list in aberdeen st should read on the list of elctrol would be carol. shirly and susan and norman the lad its every chance he the one our sid whom you are looking for his brothers house was a very tiny little house from the old early days of being built as i am typing i think there was in lady wood at one time themselves or another member of his or the wifes family co.s at the time lady wood was mentioned to me and i thought oh
they live by me in lady wood it could have been mentioned when i first met him
at home when i went back to her house to meet the parents this sid when i first met him had been or was working at saltley gas works at that time and he had been there for years he offered me a job there but i said no i was youn then
and i did not want to work night shifts i enjoyed the night club scenes every night
also is wife was a cousin or connected to ken dodd his wife was telling me .
any way i also think about what you said and lady wood because his brother lived by the central fire station in a cul sac and when they started to redelvelope the old area
that culdy would have been the first to move and demolish
in fact i would have said it backed on to the old holfords ware house that caught fire in the fifties so he would have had to move
jay i have to go now but i wil await with baited breath to hear any news from yourself best wishes astonian ;;;

Astonian - I have just looked at the 1935/36 Electoral Roll again, and see that the correct address is 3 Sydenham Place, Saint Marks Street, Ladywood.

hi jay
yes i remembered it now it was just around the corner from me
about hundred yards i lived in king edwads rd .king edwards rd was split two ways just like king edwards rd was there was a big king edwards rd and a little king edwards rd and the same applied to st, marks street a big st marks street and a little st marks streetwhich crossed the king edwards rd i ll try and find you a picture of the type of houses they was if you want but i think you need to find the missing link with sid first thinking back i think it would have been oppersite a church
and as you turned into the little st marks st i think it would have been in the first batch failing that it could have been on the same side as the church nxt to the jones ,s family i await your results best wishes astonian ..

Hi Astonian

Well first of all, I should love to see a photo of St Marks Street if you can lay your hands on one. Sydenham Place must have been a Court off there I should think.

Now, I have been searching the 1945 Electoral Roll for most of the afternoon and haven't had any luck with Sid Hanson - in fact I can't find a Sidney Hanson at all :( What I did find was an Edward and Nellie Hanson living at 91 Aberdeen Road, but as far as I know they are not connected to my Hansons. Do these names ring any bells?

I'm not giving up on Sidney yet though. I am going to keep on trying to see if I can find him by some other means. He might have been living somewhere else, who knows? Can I ask you about what year you went out with Sid's daughter? You did say you thought she was from "scoucer land" - do you think they had lived in Liverpool at some stage?

Anything you can think of at all might be useful. Thanks a lot.

Judy

hi jayell
i do not remember the house number but just afew point i want to point out to you firstly i don,t know what year they moved down in aberdeen street,and you may have looked at aberdeen rd its not listed as a road its listed as a street and i lived with them in the year of 1967.8,9 they was there in there during the sixtes that i do kmow for a fact and his name was sidney and it would not have been 91 i am sure if you plum for the dates of the sixties you will find them sid daughters carol shirley and susan and norman the son ,and for the love of money i just cannot remember the mothers name i no we called her nancy but that was not her real name
and it was the mother whom told me she originate from liverpool and i cannot rember how or where they met i know sid was in the army and by the time he done is service he joined the t.a and he was a cook i even went with him to the barracks in town with him and the family for the christmas party,s if you recheck the electrol rolls for
those 60's you will find them i do beleive there was another hanson up the rd from them but they was not related is brother was and lived in aston that i know for a fact
but make sure have aberdeen st winson green and not rd there house was last but
one on the street if you see the queens head pub listed then you have got the right street and he house should be the last but one number but one i cannot recall if its odds or evens number but the house is the same number as the queens pub ,
if if its evens then it wikk be evensor vice a versa and as i previously said there was another hanson from norman st but one is not even connected
so please check the 60.s and not the 45 erars okay plrase come back to me and i wikk try and get for conformation on the number for you best wishes astonian;

Hi Astonian

Thanks again for all the information. Unfortunately I'm not able to look at the 1960 electoral roll online - the 1945 is the latest available, and as I am in Devon I will have to wait until I get up to Birmingham later in the year. But as I can't find Sid on the 1945 he must have been somewhere else..... Mind you perhaps I could email the Brum library and ask them to check for me!

My mistake when I said Aberdeen Road - I did mean Aberdeen Street. I do think we might have the right Sid, but can't confirm it. I willl email the library now and see if they will check it out for me. Will get back to you when I hear.

Judy

hi judy
under the hansons thread you said you have sent me i em
but i have not recieved one from you are you sure it was meant for me
best wishes astonian ;;

Hi Astonian

I sent you an IM yesterday and just went to send another one, but the IM facility on your home page has disappeared, there is only Visitor Messages!!

I think I said that I received your full message yesterday and understand why part of it was deleted.

I had a message back from Brum library saying it would cost £25 per hour for Doreen Hopwood to check out information for me, so I am going to leave it until I next visit the library myself perhaps later in the year.

If you do find out anything more about Sid let me know, and I will keep you posted.

Judy

Hi Jean

Thanks for your information. I'm not sure if there is any connection to my Hansons - definitely think I would have known if John Hanson was one of mine! But, you never know with this family history do you? I will keep a note of Charlie and Violet :)
