Hall Road Handsworth

Worcs1964

Brummie babby
Does anybody have any photos of Hall Road please? my Grandad lived there early 70s and they have since pulled down thew Victorian properties that were there at the top end by Villa Road, beautiful old houses with long gardens - all gone now

I've created this new thread for Hall Road. Perhaps someone has photos of the
Villa Road/Hamstead Road end for Worcs1964. Older houses further down Hall Road still exist (nearer the junction with Welford Road).

An aerial view of the houses at the top end of Hall Road. If you have a house number (or name of your grandad) it may be possible to pinpoint the house.

EDIT: Original map shown was incorrect, this is the corrected map.

thank you so much, I really appreciate your help, he lived at Number 4 Hall Road, it was the Villa Road end, by what was Lloyds bank on the corner - I believe part of his garden wall still exists (his garden backed onto the Hamstead Road) when I go onto Google street maps, unless it was bult to look like an old wall? his name was Noel Mottram, married to Blanche Mottram (died 1968), - there is a photo on the internet taken early 1900's? at the top of Hall Road with a little boy looking at the camera and I cant find it anywhere, beautiful old Victorian houses they were and he lived in Flat 1, his neighbour was an older gentleman called Les and there was an Irish couple that lived upstairs, (probably around early 40s in age) they looked after the garden, beautiful big flowers, I have some black and white photos of the garden - well, part of the garden, taken in 1969ish, my grandpa died in 1976, and I believe not long after this the houses at the top end were all pulled down and now flats have been built, information seems to be quite limited on when this happened, I guess the houses were in need of repair or was it the usual thing that happened in the 70's when a lot of history seemed to be wiped off the map - I think about Hall Road a lot and about the people that lived there, but thank you so much for your photos and look forward to any information that anyone has :)

thank you Vivienne, yes I saw those on street maps, it seems that all the houses up the top end were sadly demolished 1977ish

I'm sorry, I read your opening post incorrectly and thought the house was at the other end of Hall Road, I will find the relevant aerial view for you although the britainfromabove.org website seems to be offline at the moment.

amazing - thank you so much for this - really appreciated
I lived at 8 Hall road from 1960 till thay knocked the houses down and torn the gardens up and built the new mini estate that's there now. The 1937 photo shows house No 2 then 4 and six ,all large detached houses. No 8 and 10 were terraced type houses withe only an entry between them, just out of shot next to No10 was the back garden wall of the garden of No85 hampstead Road. This rear wall of No 85 was actually on Welford Road. Also there was an original stables at the end of the wall , my uncle kept his Austin a 40 van in it. I may have known your grandad by sight but at 68 it slips my mind. Noele Gordon the actress would park her roller outside our house and go over to the shops an villa road. Cars were not allowed to go past our house as hall road was only one way from loyeds bank down as far as No 8 but could not go any further up to the bank. No 2 hall road was a Doctors when I was young. If you look at the photo and note the size of the sycamore tree behind No 8 and 10. It's twice as high as the three story house in front,it had three very large trunks, all joined at the base. I could never climb it's it was so wide. I wonder how thay took it down?.

wow - thank you for this! yes Grandpa's house was a doctors house previously, my grandpa walked with a limp as he had polio as a child and his wife Blanche died in 1968, we were living in Canada at the time, therefore unable to attend the funeral unfortunately. I believe the houses were demolished in 1977? is that right - must have been terrible to see that, but I remember everything about it and miss it so much as it has all changed, which makes it all worse as there is no evidence any longer, do you remember a younger lady that lived opposite my grandpa, all I remember is that she had a beehive hairstyle and had a disability with either her arm or leg, she would talk to my grandpa and was probably 18 -22? as a child you are not a good judge of ages. Again .... huge thank you for the wonderful message - fascinating :)

Hi I do remember the maloneys lived at No 9 a few houses down from the bank on the same side. But the only people I remember from around there were the o'Sullavans at 36 . The hawking's at 42 and the Purcell further down to wards the end of hall Rd. Standing on hampstead Road opposite Gibson road( to your back) there are two large gates next to 85 or 87 hampstead Road. The gate on the right is gate of garden No 10 Hall road and the left one No . These large houses at the start of hall road had very large gardens. No8 had problems with water flooding the kitchen floor in 1974 it was dug up and a round we'll with round brickwork was found. It was blocked off and screened over and the red tiles replaced. The well went good with the brick.water boiler in the kitchen ha ha. When we left that house it was 77/78 there were still hanging in the scullery, and handles for the ringing of the bells next to the very tall fireplaces I have happy memories of that house and watching the bands marching down hampstead Road to handsworth Park scout rally and the dog shows

i often wonder what made the powers that be think it was a good idea to demolish fine buildings like these were...what a waste of history
