Hi all,

I am in a mess with my grandads side of the family. He was Philip Willis 1899 birth certificate sent for. He apparently had a "secret" brother named Samuel Hale 11 years older than Philip. I can find in the 1891 a Samuel Hale aged 1 with mother Jemima Hale in West Bromwich workhouse. Nothing regarding his birth or Jemina's or death of Jemima. Does anyone know how to gain any information of births and deaths in workhouses?

As you have Phillip's birth certificate, was his mother Jemima?

The only Phillip Willis I can find on the 1901 census, born around 1899/1900 had parents by the name of James and Kate.

Births and deaths would be registered, even if they took place in the workshouse.

On the 1881 census Jemima is in the Union Workhouse, West Bromwich.

birth certificate for Philip is on its way, not received as yet. Yes i have also found that information but can't make head or tail of it. Nothing about Jemina after the workhouse and no death either. no birth for Sam Hale only that he was one year old with Jemima. The 1911 census for Philip makes no sense, as if he is the one with James and Kate, the 1911 says James and Jane (possibly remarried) but only one child living and one child born alive, yet with kate and James there are two other siblings William and Ann. very confusing. Thats why i wanted information on the workhouses, but unfortunately i cant find anything

I made a typo it was the 1891 census not the 1871 where i found them.

On the 1911 next to the wifes name it will tell you how long they have been married.
Given the age of Ann Willis and the next child I am inclined to think that she was not of the marriage of James and Kate perhaps she was Kates child.

Yes thanks alberta it shows 9 years in the marriage which means if true philip and sam not James and Janes. That hopefully will all come out with the BC, its Jemina and Sam's early days i need. :)

The Jemima in the workhouse in 1881 says age 27 this could be Jemima HALES registered 1854 June in West Bromwich ref 6b 599.
Cannot find her prior to 1881.

Thanks Alberta, will look into that. Much appreciated.

Best regards

BC for Philip Willis arrived today. Kate is his mother and her surname (formerly) was Drennan, i have looked and looked and looked and cannot find a Kate or Catherine Drennan for her so called birth date of 1871 ish. !!!
