Haberdashers in the Great Western Arcade.

Seeing Colin's list I remember Preedy's, Birmingham Dairies,[ we used to get our fresh cream cakes from there] and the china shop. I couldn't remember the name was Rhodes though.

Lynne have to confess it was mom who remembered the name - I remember the shop, Aunties used to buy the big pale green breakfast tea cups from there.

Thanks for the names Colin. I've got several photos of my Mom and Aunt taken in Dubarry Studios. This one of my Mom (around the late 1920s) was put in their window for quite some time apparently.

Sorry just read the previous post and the shop was called Barnbys.

Yes, remember that now! it was a lovely toy shop.

Thanks Colin B for the Kellys entry - I remember all now! The restaurant was McColls though I think it was known as the Victorian as previously mentioned.

This thread has brought back memories, i used to work for Geoffrey Richard Jewellers ( Midland Goldsmiths) mid 1970s. next door was a cafe that used to do lovely bacon sandwiches the cook was Russel if i remember, then a camera shop and a gents shirt and tie shop, opposite was R S C music shop and to the other side of us was Raymonds , i remember Mr Teasy Weasy looking in the shop window.
Noel Gorden used to come into the shop, ah happy days

Noelle Gordon used to drive past me in her Rolls while I was waiting for the bus on the Hamstead Road in about 1973-4. Anne

What a wonderful photo David your mother's hat wouldn't look out of place today, it's lovely. A great thread with some lovely memories thanks to all contributers!

I also worked at Geoffrey Richard in my first job as apprentice when I left school in 74. loved every minute of being part of the Great western working community. the walk down the arade at 5 tO 9. in the morning with ones footsteps echoing down the arcade was great. As apprentice I was given the job of clearing out the celler stepping over the dead rats lol

Wasn't the cafe The Victorian Tea Rooms? I used it most mornings for breakfast when I worked in St Philips Place many years ago. The two chaps who ran it did a really good job. The front of house one used to be a manager at The Albany I seem to remember.
I always took my staff there for one of our many Christmas lunches. Oh, those were the days.

I had my wedding outfit from the dress shop in the arcade, I thought it was a bit frumpy but it kept the mother in law who was paying happy

The dress shop was quite old-fashioned when my aunts used to go, so I can imagine you would have thought so Patty, but lovely quality things if I remember rightly. I used to love the hats to go with the outfits and pestered till I got to try one on, still love hats now!

I remember the toy shop as Preedys too, so Im pretty sure it must have changed from Barnbys at some point. Anyone else remember the big Meccano display in the window?

Doing some more searching online Im shocked to find that much of the the arcade (the Colmore Row end anyway) was not covered for many years due to bomb damage in the war, and was only returned to a covered arcade some time later.

Did anyone else see the report in the papers about the Vintage/retro shop in the Arcade now, in trouble for having clothing with lewd comments on in its window display!!
Sue

Yes it was called Hardwicks. I used to do a lot of dressmaking and i could get anything i needed from that shop. I missed it terribly when it closed down
