H M Vale Jewellery Shop.

Hi

And thanks for excepting me my name is Luke and I collect First World War Medals and silver war badge. I recently obtained a SWB that is engraved on the reverse HM Vale 102 Vincent St Birmingham. The man in question before he joined up and did his bit in the war worked as a Jewellery assistant same address as above but intended place of residence. With Added Balsall Heath Birmingham. I was wondering if this address was an old Jewellery shop back in the day maybe he lived above or Family owned. Any info would be great or pointers in the right direction thanks Luke.

There are few mentions of 102 Vincent Street in the archives ranging from 1878 to 1959,
and seem to suggest a private dwelling.

It is not listed in Kellys, which would indicate it was a private residence. If you have not seen them the electoral rolls of 1918 and 1919 list Herbert William Vale as there 299666 RE, and remaining there with other members of the family till 1927

I used to live in Vincent Street and my grandparents lived there until the end of the 70's when most of it was demolished. The only shop I can remember on that side of the street was a Greengrocers, but that wasn't at number 102 I think it was a couple of doors away at number 100.

According to War Pension records Herbert William Vale was a train (or it might say tram) driver when he enlisted. He seems to have been trained as a plumber according to the record on Ancestry when in the RE. His discharge says "conduct very satisfactory" and "an excellent plumber". He seems to have had a payment of 5/6 for 24 weeks from 11 July 1918 to 31 Dec 1918. That began the day after his discharge.
I am not sure how this fits with the info in #1

Just found Herbert on 1911 census and he is not the person in #1. That must be Harry Malcom Vale. There seem to be 3 brothers living with their Aunt at 102 Vincent street. Harry is listed in Kelly's 1900 as a Jeweller at 159 Dudley Road.
