While researching a family member who is listed in the 1911 census (Birmingham, St George) as a Brass worker at a gas and electric chandelier manufacturer, I was given the attached photograph:
I assume that she did not change jobs between the census and this picture and that therefore H C Phillips was a chandelier manufacturer. I have been unable to find a company of that name and would appreciate any information.
My relative is Amy Hilda Woodward, front row, right. There is an amusing anecdote attached to her employment there; a male member of staff took a liking to Amy and would touch parts of her anatomy that she preferred not to be touched. On one occasion he crept up behind her and in surprise she dropped the tray of crystal glass chandelier parts she was carrying, breaking them all. She was dismissed on the spot. She said afterwards that had she known that was all it would take to escape the attentions of this man, she would have done it sooner.
