I have just found grandads records from the 1918 census of absent voters and got image from National Archives of the medal card - even though we do not have any medals. I do not know anything about his time in the war - can anyone help. He was born in 1882 and married with children before war broke.

He was William Pedley - private 42965 3rd Bn Royal Berks In.

Any info would be great.

The 3rd Battalion was a training/reserve unit, based in England. If you look up the medal roll that the card indicates (L/105B14 page 2467), then his entry will tell you the battalion he served with once overseas. The rolls are not online - they are held at the National Archives.

Without his battalion, we can't tell you too much about his service.

His number 42965 is quite a "late" one. I would say it is very improbable that he was overseas before September 1918 and that it is almost certain he was a conscript, called up earlier that year.

Thanks for this information Chris. I sadly do not know very much about WW1 and thought he was too old to be called up to fight. He worked for BSA and was married with 2 children. Thanks, leelou

The age for conscription in WWI was varied. However the upper limit was extended to 51 in April 1918.

See this page for more information.

Thanks. We have no pictures so any information is wonderful. Found this out from the absent votes 1918 electorol roll.

The medal card i downloaded just had the one page and I need it translated by someone who understands these things! Could anyone provide a better copy for me with the text explained - sorry to be a bit dim!;)
lou.

Had a look at the medal card on Ancestry UK. It states that he was entitled to two medals. The War and Victory Medals. This means he went into a theatre of War after 1 Jan 1916. No other info.

Regards

Terry

Sorry to contiue to be dim but does that mean he saw active service abroad?
