bren, thanks for the offer of a bit of help. I only gained access to these documents when my last full blood brother died. The papers are all a bit tatty and have been repaired/ruined with cellotape. I have two step-brothers alive. One is from mother and the other is from father, both from previous marriages. I assume the way forward is to do either mom or dad and I have dads birth certificate so here goes.
Dad was born on 12th October 1892 and the certificate is No. 897. He was born at 24 Court 2 Lower Tower St. He often talked about Summer Lane. First name Ernest, middle name could be Barry. Would it help if I posted the document so you can see it because it is difficult to read.
The only thing legible on the demobilization paper is his No. Regimental No. 2076
If there is any costs/charge can I pay on the theme night?

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

I'm sorry I did not put the surname did I. The middle name is iffy on the document but it looks like Barry . The full name being Ernest Barry Gould.
Surname interest GOULD

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

Could his regimental number be 20761?
That is this chap, Ernest Gould of the Army Cyclist Corps (ACC).

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

Lloyd, yes that is the one. I am sorry but on a closer look there is a one on the end. The story in the family was that he lied about his age and when they found out they let him be a messenger on a cycle. When he was older they put him on a horse. The horse kicked him and injured his kne. I remeber him always wearing a leg iron in the winter and rubbing his leg with Wintergreen.

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

Well, i can't find a birth for him in 1891/2/3.

Can you give us the details from his marriage cert, name, age, who he married, her name and age

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

If he was born 1892 then he was well old enough if you are on about WW1, are you sure that date is correct

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

In Dec qtr 1892 there was only two Ernest Gould born, one in Manchester and the other was Williton (Somerset)

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

Marriage took place 26,Aug.1939. Moms name was Dorothy Edith Seal. Dad was 41 and mom was 37. Dad was a widower and mom was the divorced wife of Benjamin Seal.Dads father was named Henry Gould. When I said previously that my dads middle name was Barry it could be Henry because it almost impossible to read.

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

The marriage certificate says he was aged 41 when he married in 1939.

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

This is the only one born in Brum and is about correct for age on marriage cert

Ernest Gould 4th qtr 1897 Birmingham 6d 142

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

Bren, would it help if I scan the documents and post them on here?

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

A scan of the birth cert. would be helpful - Gould is not a rare name!

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

bren, thanks for the help, fingers crossed.

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

Lloyd, I only have my mothers birth certificate.

Re: Aid/Advice for Beginners

Sorry about that Lloyd. I do have my fathers birth certificate but it is in bad condition. Here is it in two pieces. I hope you can get something from it for me. I told bren I will pay any costs and buy you a pint on the night.

Stitcher, now this post has been moved you can go back and see i have put the birth details on for you

Marriage
Ernest Gould/ Dorothy E Pavitt 3rd qtr 1939 Birmingham 6d 1791

Note, no middle name, her name was Seal previously, so now i can look for a Seal/Pavitt marriage

That cert doesn't say Ernest Barry it says Ernest, Boy, look at the heading above, it also says 1897

Bren, I have found another document. It is for Yardley Cemetary 2nd Feb 1937 for the internment of a man named Drew. I had a stepsister named Drew but she is dead now. The payee was Dorothy Seal , 100 Tilton Rd Small Heathe. Should I post that on the other site?

The other thread has been moved here to Surname Interests so post it here. The cert you have put on says -

12th Oct 1897, you got the address correct, Ernest (NO middle name)
Sex: Boy, Father: Harry Gould, Mother: Emma Gould formerly Mottram, it should have fathers ocupation next but that has been ripped, X Mark of Emma mother, date of being registered 20th December.

She has made her mark with a cross probably because like so many others she was illiterate. Now you know the names of your grandparents

Hi Stitcher,I think I have found Ernest and his family in the 1901 census,(mistranscribed as Gold),living at 6 back of 48 Devonshire St,Hockley.
I hope this is of some use.

Looks like Emma is using the name Gold in 1891 too. She's lodging in Cecil St with Mabel. No sign of Henry - unless he's the infantryman down in Brentwood, but he's listed as single.

Births

Trevor Gould mmn Pavitt 1st qtr 1940 Birmingham 6d 796
Roger Gould mmn Pavitt 2nd qtr 1942 Birmingham 6d 644
Linda J Gould mmn Pavitt 4th qtr 1945 Birmingham 6d 550

I searched up to the end of 1952, i did find three more Gould/Pavitt but they was in Epping so i don't think they are yours unless you know different.

Stitcher, i am having trouble pinning down the first marriage for your father, would you happen to know her name, if not, what is the name of your step brother and his date of birth, i can look that up and it will give me his mothers maiden name. I suspect he might have met and married outside of Brum when he was in the army

bren

I have put moms birth certificate and a burial reciept for a family member on the other thread.
Re the name GOLD, I was told many years ago that dads family were Russian Jews and they changed the name Gold to Gould when they got here. I always doubted this because dads accent was jusy like a typical brummie and I thought he would have had a bit of a foreign accent if his parents were foriegn. There used to be a picture on the wall at home 60 years ago. It was a naval man with braid on his cap,I was told it was grandad on moms side.

I really cant thank you all enough for what you have already found out.

My older Step Brother on Dads side said dad was in the South Staffs regiment and was kicked out for bad behaviour and lost his pension.
