I am trying to find any information about my grandfather William Goodchild b.1890 d.1962 who ran a hardware store at 13 Sun Steet around 1926. I believe my uncle Jack Williams ran a bike shop next door. Any photos or info appreciated.
Names being researched: goodchild, saunders, chadaway

In 1921 13 Sun St was run by William Richard Moore as a hardware dealers, and he is listed on the electoral roll there in 1925. . I do not have Kellys for the period immediately around 1926, but from 1932 – 1950 William Goodchild is listed there as a hardware dealer. No 13 is not listed in 1956, by which time the area was being “redeveloped”. William and his wife jane are listed on the electoral rolls as living there 1930-1950 (1926-1929 . and 1951 onwards not available online)
I attach a map showing what i'm pretty sure is no 13 in red

Hi Mike
Thanks for that info. I have a Davenport's 'CB' Certificate dated July 13th 1926 and giving my grandad's address as 13 Sun Street so I assume he brought the shop around that time and retired in 1950. It is interesting to see that he and his wife (Jane Eleanor Chadaway) lived at that address since I know that they retired to Nether Whitacre and my uncle moved his shop to Sheldon. Just joined the forum and finding it great!!!
Cheers Bill

Glad to help Bill
Have checked, and certainly up to 1945 they had a residential qualification to be on the roll. In the 1950 roll there appears to be no note of the qualification for them or anyone else. I am not sure in that year what the position was.

Thanks Mike
What about the Kelly entries for my uncle Jack Williams who, I think, had a bike shop next door - either no. 11 or 15 Sun Street? I understand that when Sun Street was 'redeveloped' both my grandad and uncle were offered new shop but only Jack moved premises to Sheldon. I have memories of selling records at my uncle's shop - the record side of the business was run by auntie Doss (Dorothy). BTW how do I keep the note of all the family names I am interested in at the bottom of my posts, like you have?
Cheers Bill

The numbering in the street was consecutive, so next door would be 12 or 14.
I noticed, on looking for your uncle, that William Goodchild is also listed in 1938-1940 as a cycle dealer at no 19 Sun St. wouldn’t think there would be two different ones so close, so he had a second string to his bow. In 1949 and 1950 J.A.Williams occupied no 12 listed as a cycle dealer. In 1956 he is listed as the occupant of no13 , your uncles old shop, as a hardware dealer. He (and no 13) has gone by 1962.
J.A.Williams is not listed on the electoral roll at no 12 or 13 in 1945 or 1950. there is however a J.A.Williams on the roll in 1950 at no 6 back 10 sun St. (though J.A.Williams wouldn’t be a very unusual name) . Goodchild is a more unusual name however and in 1945 Elizabeth M. Goodchild is on the rolls at 45 Sun St (that would be on the other side of the road) and Irene F.Goodchild was at no 10 Sun St. In 1950 Irene F and George J.Goodchild are living at back 18 sun St.

To Mike, really great to get the complicated history of the Goodchild's in Sun Street. JA Williams is my uncle, who died this year, who married my aunt Dorothy Goodchild. Elizabeth Myra Goodchild (nee Saunders) is my mum and it was great to see her at 45 Sun Street in 1945 since that was the year that I was born. Irene and George also lived in Sun Street who are my dad's brother and his wife of whom I have only one early photo of George.
I believe George went on to run a working men's club and I remember my dad helping to build a Legion Club on the Bristol Rd (?)
I am now going to talk to my sister and see what she can fill in.
Is anyone aware of the date that Sun Street was demolished and redeveloped.
Cheers Bill
BTW Still don't know how to add family names being researched to the bottom of my posts - Goodchild, Saunders, Chadaway

Hi Paul
Thanks for the pics of Sun Street. These must be around mid 50's and the left hand side of the road was demolished not bombed since I have memories of working in my grandad's shop at no. 13 and I was born in 1945. Also my uncle Jack was running a shop there in mid 50's. My brother seems to think the shops on the opposite side of the road were Freer's newagent and Brinkworth's grocer. I will see if I can find out if George Tylor worked for either me grandad or uncle.
Cheers Bill

These are the places listed for 1956 on the other side of the street:

32 Heath H. newsagt

41 Averley Harry,hairdrssr

44 Brinkworth J. grocer

51 Evanson Mrs. Edna,shopkp

Thanks Mike
We are building a good picture of the shops in Sun Street with my grandad's hardware shop at No 13 (1932-50) and my uncle Jack's bike shop at No 12 (1949-50) and your input on Nos 32,41,44 and 51 in 1956. We may be able to map the whole history and families of Sun Street at this rate!!
Cheers Bill

Researching names: Goodchild, Saunders and Chadaway

Following the links from 'Sun Street' I came across your post.
In 1901 my Great Grandmother Isobella Round lived at 13 Sun St with her husband John and children including my Grandmother who was born there. At some point number 13 was a Fish 'n' Chip shop run by my Great Grandmother. Unfortunately the shop had to close due to roadworks stopping customers from getting to the shop.
In 1891 the family lived in 4 court number 7 house Sun Street.

Regards Paul
