The Giblin Brothers: Violence, Brotherhood, and the Fall of a Gang
After six months of research I’ve just published the seventh and final chapter of my blog series on the notorious Slogging Gangs of Birmingham of the Giblin Brothers and their associates. The seventh blog focuses on Tommy Giblin, a man shaped by poverty, hardened by violence, and remembered as one of the city's most feared street fighters.
His brother John Giblin was equally feared—but the twist? We believe a different John Giblin, a neighbour also involved in crime, was wrongly imprisoned for a serious offence likely committed by Tommy’s brother.
The blog ends with a powerful letter from the Birmingham Daily Post (1871), which may well answer the question I began with:
“What made children become such violent men?”
