George Dallow 1911 - 1915

Brock

master brummie
Could any kind soul possibly look up a business address for me please between 1911 to about 1915.
My ancestor's name was George Dallow and he is described as being a corn factor (corn merchant).
I believe that he lived in Garrison Lane in the parish of Aston but I would like to know where his business was situated in Birmingham.
Any help would be most welcome.

Thank you.
Brock.

Hi Brock

Your ancestor made himself busy, he had a grocers at 178-180 Garrison Lane and a Drapers at 121 -123 Garrison Lane both owned by the same mr George Dallow as recorded in Kelly's 1913 edition.

Hi Phil, many thanks for your reply, it's much appreciated.
George Dallow came from an ordinary hard working family and from the various records that we know of he had a great variety of labouring jobs of all sorts. Like you found, I also had come across entries which referred to him as a draper and grocer in the early years of the 1900's.
His first wife died in 1911 & he re-married in 1912 and on both certificates he is referred to as a corn factor.
It seems that his corn business grew and became very successful which brought him great wealth.
He & his 2nd wife retired to the Catshill area of Bromsgrove where George is known to have been very involved in helping his surrounding area and he became a member of the committee of the board of guardians for the Bromsgrove workhouse. He died leaving several thousands of pounds in his will -- not bad for a man who struggled to rub two pennies together in his younger days i guess. He had an obituary in "The Times" which referred to him as being a retired successful corn merchant.
There are many references to him being a corn factor or corn merchant but I just cannot find any references to his business, what it was called and where it was in Birmingham!

Once again, many thanks,
Brock.
