George and Dragon

Quibell

proper brummie kid
Does anyone have knowledge of a 19 century pub called the George and dragon in Birmingham. My great grandfather was " publican " of that establishment. I realise the implications of the title, " publican ", during that period.

I'm not sure what the "implications " of being a publican were supposed to be. But there is a problem, as it was a common name. In 1876 there were 7 pubs in the Birmingham directory named "George & Dragon", and this would not have included any small beerhouses with that name, which, while included in the directory, would not have been named

There was a pub of that name in neighbouring Shirley.

Perhaps if we know the name of the person and the source we might have a better chance of identifying it.
I believe William Bennett was the license with his wife Selina. The Census placed them in The George and Dragon, but I can't for the life of me find the paperwork giving that information. At the moment " Find my Past ", won't let me view my old searches although searches were all payed for at the time.
I was told that many of the Beerhouses were not what we would consider today as a pub, and had a dubious reputation, but if it was a Beerhouse, would it bear a name such as George and Dragon.

There are a few George and Dragons in 19C Birmingham. Can you narrow the date down from 100 years?

Listed as a beer retailer at 2 Cranemore Street Nechells (same address as marriage certificate) in 1896 Kelly's directory

I think its possible that a beer house would have a name such as this. All beerhouses had a name, and most had a sign ourside which could be recognised, such as a "George & Dragon"

There is a thread for Cranemoor Street…

1891 census William Bennett and Selina Quibbell listed in Cranemore Street running an "outdoor"(beerhousr). No name given to it.
