Looking for information on the Garner family who lived on Allison St.(4 different houses), Sherlock St., Cooksey Rd., Small Heath and Cattell Rd., Small Heath. between April 1873 and March 1888.
Father: John George b. May 3, 1834; d. March 5, 1888. buried Yardley Cemetery.
Mother: so far no Marriage Certificate for John George has been found - where could we look for them? one mother: Anne, ne Howcraft d.? (mother of first child, b. 1873) second mother: Sarah Anne (Annie) ne Graham. (first child b. 1876, and three more children)) d. July 1886; buried July 18 1886 Children: all born in Aston, Birmingham, while living on one of the streets named above. John Henry b. April 29, 1873; d. March 23, 1950, Ontario Canada. have report cards from Park St. School and Meriden St. School. Elizabeth Ann b. July 26 1876; d. Oct. 14 1949 Saskatchewan Canada. Annie b. Feb. 17 1879 d. ? infant. Lucy b.Feb. 15, 1880; d. Dec. 20, 1940 western Canada. Emma b. Sept. 18, 1882; d. May 11, 1969, Ontario. All 4 children emigrated together to the area near London Ontario, under care of the Middlemore Society. They left England on April 27, 1888, not long after death of father. They were placed in different families, but kept in lifelong contact. All became proud Canadians, and have many Canadian descendants but also respected their Birmingham origins and shared some stories with their families.
John George is listed on childrens' birth certificates to have been a Machinist, fitter, gunsmith, gunviewer .
He had several siblings, including Joseph (b. 1837; d. 1900; buried Warstone Lane Cem.) Emily Ellen.( b. 1849; d. 1911 in USA); Ann, Henry, Susan. (1851 Census) John George's father was John Garner (b. 1800? d. Birmingham); and his mother was Elizabeth Kibbler (Korbler? (b.1808, d. ?)
OL - lots of information - but also lots of questions, especially marriage cert., and social history of the lives they may have lived in that area of Birmingham and that time period, that led the children to be sent to Canada. I may be in Birmingham briefly in late May, and perhaps there are specific places that I could visit to get more information?

I can't find marriage registrations for either John or either of the women: nor the women's deaths.

Do you have the children's birth certificates? They should give some details.

John Henry Garner b reg. 2nd quarter 1873 Birmingham vol 6d page 104
Elizabeth Garner 3rd quarter 1876 Birmingham vol 6d page 106
Annie Garner 1st quarter 1879 Birmingham vol 6d page 132
Lucy Garner 1st quarter 1880 Birmingham vol 6d page 122
Emma Garner 4th quarter 1882 Birmingham vol 6d page 97

Annie's death reg. 1st quarter 1880 Birmingham vol 6d page 56.

There are a few threads on here that refer to the Middlemore charity - use the search box towards the top right of this page. Some records exist, apparently.

Thank you to all of the members for all the quick responses. The info matches material we have picked up from a variety of family members who have done some research. We can now be sure that the info is accurate.
I would really like to try to find out about any marriages of John George. Should I be looking for marriage records in the communities where his wife/wives may have come from? e .g. Manchester?

These may sound like a silly questions, however as I have been unable to find any marriages either anywhere in the Uk for the mother's names mentioned... Do you have any of the children's birth cert's that confirm that these were their mother's maiden names? If so my only other suggestion is could either of the mother's have been married before do you think and married John under a different surname, the one from their first marriage ....?

Do you have a Annie Garner who was born in Aston in1910 in your history: She was a friend of the Jays family from the same area. She came up to Manchester (England) in 1932 to Temple Street but we don't have any further details? Any help appreciated - Anthony Dunleavy

Just running through some of the threads and I see you are researching Garner. I have a John Garner born 1806 in Oxfordshire d. 1878 who married an Elizabeth Kibbler b. 1808 in Hampton in Arden, Warwickshire on 13 October 1828 in Hampton in Arden. Could this possibly be the one you are looking for?
