Furnace Meadow, Lozells

By accident today I came across a reference to Furnace Meadow (and Guildford House) on the 1851 census. Lyn (and I) think it would be a good idea to start a new thread on this subject. The 1841 census also lists this area (approx. 19 properties at Furnace Meadow) as well as reference to round hills Park Lane, Potters Fields and Paper Mill Yard.

Yes. Wheeler st (though the name is not fully shown) is the road immediately to the west of the red area. Misread the itinerary at first and thought it said just the east of wheeler st. Here it is both sides. I assume the area did not go past burbury st

how interesting pedro thanks for that and just a footnote to our eagle eyed map experts who may wonder why george st is showing where it is on mikes map...if memory serves me right i think it was to become clifford st

Trouble is maps of Aston that show any detail and street names other than those here pre 1880s are non existent in the public domain, though there likely are some in the library. Directories pre 1870 are not very good with regards Aston roads either- include some but not all. But cannot find any other mention of a Gerome st

thanks mike i know i have a map somewhere that shows either gerrard or clifford st under a previous name...dont worry about it i will have a good look tomorrow..however i found the article pedro posted very interesting in that a place selling sand was called a mine

It is intriguing that the Gerome Street shown on the map (c. 1848) in post #3 could not be found on the 1841 census. There is however 1 property listed as Gerrard Street, suggests the map was incorrect perhaps?
