Fuller/Gough marriage

Could someone please kindly check the details of a marriage at St Martin's of Christopher Fuller (I hope of Islington, Middlesex) and Maria Gough.

21st November 1820

Christopher died in 1850, followed by his wife so soon after that she couldn't prove his Will. The Will was witnessed (and quite possibly drawn up) by Francis John Gough (a Solicitor) of East St, Red Lion Sq, London, and his clerk (and, I think, son) Charles Gough.

the certificate is extremely hard to read as it is very faded

but i can make out christopher fuller of this parish (followed by something else but im almost certain it is middx) bachelor and maria gough of this parish spinster

witnesses were c.a.fuller and job fuller

all persons signed their names :)

Some follow-up questions:

Any chance the signatures could be 'E a Fuller' (his sister was Elizabeth Ashbery Fuller) and 'JoS Fuller' (uncle was Joseph)?

Does it say if they were married by licence?

Is Chris Fuller 'of this parish' or 'of the parish of ...'. While I know he married Maria Gough, I can't think what he was doing in Brum: presumably Maria's home parish, but what a pity it doesn't say anything about her family!

ive had another look and enlarged it as much as possible but it is still very difficult. anyway i think yes it could be "of the parish of st. mary ????????????? middx.

yes the marriage was by licence

witness could easily be jos fuller but other witness is clearly c a fuller

in these early days no other info was recorded

i think the good thing is that it does say middx which is what you were hoping
 
studying it again i think it does say of the parish of st. mary islington, then a word i cant make out, then middx :)

also there is another witness but i just cant make it out. will get my hubby to look later but its difficult. i only got the other words because i knew what it might be. the extra witness is a fuller though, just cant make out first name so whyever he was in birmingham he brought some family with him!

in a directory of bham dated 1781 there is a christopher fuller ... pawnbroker ...address 52, digbeth

also in 1841 there is a joseph fuller aged 75 pawnbroker living bham

i wonder if these are relatives of your christopher

Yes, I'd seen the pawnbrokers before. Something to followup, I suppose!!

Well, there's much that has opened up. I googled ashbery and fuller, and found loads of stuff in Birmingham City Archives all about what must be this family. Lots of stuff in Tanworth in Arden. Much to follow up now and stop me doing any work!!

I wonder if the unreadable word might be 'gent'. His will has it and his father John is 'esq'.

Nothing on Goughs yet, tho' I know this is a good Birmingham name.

the word isnt bachelor as that is readable further on, this is some part of the address after islington and before middlesex.
 
Yes, of course, I hadn't remembered you'd said. Looking fwd to copy. It may be St Mary's, the main church in Is, I think.

this is just a possibility for your maria gough

birth of maria anna gough 25 sep 1796 christened 25 apr 1797 at st. peter r.c. birmingham. parents thomas gough and margaritae annae brown.

there is also in 1841 living at New John Street West, Bham

thomas gough aged 65 independent
hannah gough (could be middle name) 70

they also have a 14yr old servant living with them

worth looking at anyway :)
