Froggatt Buildings Bordesley Street

Not sure if this is the right place, but need some help.

On the 1861 Census I find my great great grandmother Ellen Redding and it says she lives in what looks like Froggatt, Bordesley Street. Now I kow where Bordesley Street is, but what is Froggatt, writing isn't at all clear. Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Secondly, on the marraige certificate of my great grandfather George (Ellen's son) it shows his father William as being a Soldier. William was born in 1821. Shows the same Soldier (deceased) on marriage when George married for second time. Would appreciate if anyone could help on how I go about finding out where Wiliam was a soldier?

Bit of a long shot, but hope someone can help with both of the above.

Thank you

Bordesley Street is still there it r suns from Park Street to the junction of Milk Street and Barn Street more or less parallel with Digbeth I seem to remember seeing an old map with a place called the Froggery on but don't know it's location . I will have a look for the map

hi christina, on the 1861 census it appears to say - froggatts building, bordesley street.

It is between Barn St & Pickford St (from studying numbers on either side). The c1889 OS map shows severzal courts there, one of which may or may not be Froggart's buildings (or they may have been demolished by then . No 79 is listed in the 1867 directory as being occupied by George Froggart, scrap dealer, Thomas hill, chainmaker, John Petts, blacksmith and Edward smith, coppersmith. That would explain the name.

I have studied it further, and think that probably thr buildings were demolished before the c1889 map. I can, hoever give you some numbers around there , and the position of the numbered building should not have altered, so you will have a better idea as to where the buildings were. The c 1889 map is below between Barn & Pickford st, with numbers that I am pretty sure of in red. Froggatt's Buildings seem to be by no 79, so could be on site of court 18, certainly around there.

Thanks all for your help on this. I found the Frogerry which was demolished in 1852 and now lies under New Street Station. So it seems it was Froggatt Building. Thanks for the OS plan.

Now need to find William as a soldier.

Regards to all
