freezer disaster

wasnt sure where to post this item, but it concerns food, Did a couple of hours
in the garden this morning, thought,Heh! better get something out of the freezer
for lunch, I have a fridgefreezer, opened the door and a wall of water came flooding out, and all the contents were defrosted.Strange the fridge light was on
and it was cold inside. My house contents insurance is with Saga, and some years ago they put a £100 excess on the freezer contents so I stopped it so I
must have lost about £50/60 worth of food.My kitchen appliances are covered
by BG who are are coming out tomorrow morning. Not my Day? nevermind

Not much consolation I know but when we had a similar disaster the insurance co were more than helpful and lost only a small percentage of the cost. I got rid of SAGA when they jacked up costs above main line companies.

Oh Bernard, hope you were able to cook some of the food to re-freeze,it is frustrating when they go wrong!
Our fridge freezer did the same and the engineer said that it was the thermostat controlling the freezer that had failed, like you, the fridge light was still on. Luckily, i had changed my insurance to one who paid out on over £50 loss of frozen food, so we did get some money back.
hope you soon get it sorted.
Sue

BERNARD AM SORRY ABOUT YOUR FREEZER and it's contents but we too got rid of Saga some time back. I would shop around as Miriam found out when she looked into freezer insurance. Jean.

Bernard whatever you do dont throw away the desfrosted food as they will want proof if you are claiming for it.

Not what we were told by Zurich Carolina; in fact the woman said that the last thing they wanted to examine was a pile of rotting food. In our case about £300-00 worth [mainly fish that muggins had foolishly bought].

Bernie i agree about the smell. You could always photograph it. Each Insurer seems to have their own rules. I hope Bernard's works out well for him.

We had a short power-cut where I live yesterday, and I thought, "Here we go again!" with the freezer. Fortunately the juice was back on in 10 minutes. I was with Saga for house & contents insurance, but gave up with them when our freezer de-frosted some time ago. They were not at all helpful, but fortunately we'd just come back from holiday and there wasn't much food in it. I moved to Lloyd's where I got the same cover half-price, and moved again to Churchill, same cover cheaper still. Saga refused to quote me for car-insurance, presumably because I dumped them, but I still get stuff through the post from them....guess what I do with it?

Following the saga of my freezer, rang up Saga who gave me the number for
Zurich who now underwrite their insurance, the young lady said she wanted a
itemized list with price, also digital photos of all the food, and then said, There
will be an excess of £100 on the claim!!!what a waste of time, told them to forget it. Now have to leave it switched off for 24 hours to defrost inside. Bernard.

Bernard, l know what you are going through unfortunatly.....every summer we hope we don'nt have a hurricane as the power is off for days, and in these temperatures 100degs+ even frozen food defrosts pretty fast....over the years we have lost huge amounts of food can'nt leave it in the freezer as it would rot...so its best to sack it and dump it its the same as all our neighbours, the first few days everyone has a BBQ but even that gets old after awhile, it usually take about a week for the power to come back on by then the freezer has had a good cleanout and we are ready to stock up again...but not like you we are not able to claim off the insurance so we take a tax deduction at the years end........we have'nt had a major storm for a few years and were keeping our fingers crossed that we don'nt get one this year.....Brenda

Bernard Miriam had the same excess for freezer food and she has nowhere near that amount in her freezer. Big Gee Saga have given up on us as they have stopped sending us info through the post.

Looks as my F/F is working again now all the ice has gone. I have a freezer
refriderator themometer which I placed inside and it now -20. Strange I received a card from Iceland yesterday, if I make five visits before July 15th
and spend £10 each time I get ten pounds back in August.looks so furlorn and
empty at the moment. Made myself a pot of tea this afternoon, and guess what,
the milk was all floating on the top, not my week so far!!! Bernard

So sorry you have had all thos trouble Bernard. How things have changed over the years. When this happened to us about 15rs ago, we were insured with Norwich Union (now Aviva), and they paid us without any hassle and no excess either. I realize now how lucky we were.

Unfortunately now there is a general pool of "trained" employees who service Banks, insurance companies and financial institutions. They all have the same level od competance probity and morality

Three cheers for Wheeley Bins, all my defrosted food is on its way to the tip,
went into our local Coop this morning and they had just reduced a load of
pork chops from £4 to 1.75, starting to fill up again, life goes on dont it,
Bernard
