i am trying to find a ww1 soldier alfred william baker from nuneaton (born in banbury about 1884) who served through the great war 1914-1918 in the RE`s as a sapper and was gassed but never wounded he was married to elsie in 1908 and my nan was born in 1909

There are a few possible service records available on Ancestry - the best fit from what you have said is perhaps:

Name: William Alfred Baker
Estimated birth year: abt 1886
Age at Enlistment: 30
Residence: 18 Meath Rd, West Ham E 15
Document Year: 1916
Regimental Number: 43368
Regiment Name: Road & Quarry Troops RE RE (Transportation Branch)
Number of Images: 12

But he seems to live and die (in 1924) in West Ham

Births Dec 1870 Baker Alfred William Banbury 3a 697

On that basis a candidate may be:

Name: Alfred Baker
Estimated birth year: abt 1872
Age at Enlistment: 42
Birth Parish: Hockley {I think it actually reads Hinckley which is near Nuneaton}
Birth County: Warwick
Document Year: 1914
Regimental Number: 2146 (Royal Warks)
With wife Clara and children Etty, Alfred, Harry? James

But it is not certain. If not him, hope someone else can find him

I doubt whether Road and Quarry troops RE would have the rank of sapper. There are medals for three Alfred William Bakers - none remotely fit. There are 370 Alfred Baker's including 30 in the RE.
