The Fiddle & Bone closed in 2003, when the two guys from the CBSO lost their music licence. It looks like The Rainbow Pub in Digbeth is now facing closure, as their music licence is also now in threat, due to complaints about the noise.

A couple of photos of The Fiddle & Bone, and one of The Roundhouse.

Thanks for posting those Ann I feel like a small white dry in the second by the water. Thanks again. Jean.

Anyone know how those stables worked. There seems to be arches around the bottom with openings beyond and there seems to be a second floor with small windows. Where did the horses reside? There must have been an inclined ramp to the second floor, if the horses were inside. It seems to be in reasonable condition from the photos'.

I have posted links to some nice plans of the buildings in question in another thread however here it is again for those who may have missed then. Go to the Birmingham Council Planning online page at the following;

www.birmingham.gov.uk/GenerateContent?CONTENT_ITEM_ID=67548&CONTENT_ITEM_TYPE=0&MENU_ID=12189

Then enter one of the following numbers in the “Application Number” box and click “Go”.

C/00371/06/FUL

C/00372/06/LBC

On the next page click “Related Documents” to see available plans, they are in PDF format so you will need Acrobat Reader to view them. Do a separate search for each application, they are both different applications.

Excellent ref. Dave, it looks like it will be well preserved if these plans are carried out. If you read the statements and supporting statements at the bottom a good idea can be gained of past use and future plans. 200 horses were capable of housing in two stories both levels capable of being accessed from the towpath and street elevations by ridged ramps to be retained as is. Blacksmith and farrier facilities were there. The future looks sound indeed. In fact the outward appearance will hardly change at all. 'A fortress like appearance'. Wonderful.

I used to go to the Fiddle and Bone regularly to watch live bands..and it was in my old neck of the woods Ladywood.it was there before the local neighbours were there.but they sadly got it closed

I can also remeber some of the locals in the new properties were up in arms because parts of Ladywoood are B16 B18 and so on but they wanted the post code which is on my birth certificate as Birmingham 1 they asked if the boundry could be moved...cheeky beggars

Mossy

Mossy,

We used to go there too, and couldn't believe it, when the residents complaints lost The Fiddle & Bone their licence. And Birmingham had already lost a lot of the smaller live music venues. Such a shame.

Ann

Ann did you ever see a group called The Detonator's at tha Fiddle the lead guitarist played like B B King

Mossy

it was the yuppies whom bought the pent houses acrossthe rd that made the application not the residents off the light thorne estate whom objected to the loud music and blocked there licence if i was gonna buy a property it certainly would not live oppersite or next door to a pub it would be common sense not to
we get the city clickers coming out to the country side buying barn conversions and they are trying to convert villages pubs and complaining
if you are a city person then stay in the city or except the country code
best wishes astonian ;;;;

No Mossy we didn't catch the Detonator's.

Astonian,

Yes I knew it was the ones from the apartments, that caused The Fiddle to close. How would we have felt in the 60's and 70's, if The Opposite Lock or Rum Runner, or any of the music venues, had lost their music licences?

Ann

I took some photos of The Fiddle and Bone yesterday. Does it have a future, and if so would it no longer be a pub?

The Fiddle & Bone didn't last long after reopening a few years ago. Is now called The Distillery.

Viewed from Sheepcote Street.

Hi Ellbrown
The reason it did not last very long was because the residents complained and made a petion to the council to have it closed
down on a noise abatement order which they won and forced its owners to close it down permently
and thats why it did not stay the course it was a very busy outlet packed every night
brillient music jazz you could sit outside on the open canal towpathe with a table and well lightened
there was never no druggs or fights
It was a crying shame that they closed it best wishes Astonian,, Alan,,
