Ferrers Family - Sutton Coldfield History

cazap

proper brummie kid
Has anyone in Sutton got any knowledge of the various manor houses/halls in sutton and their 18th century residents. I am trying to trace the ferrers family during their various stays in a house/hall in Sutton during the 1700's Edward Ferrers & Thomas ferrers especially
The last Mr Ferrers seemed to think it was New Hall but they have no records ofthem renting there or being in residence at various times.
Any help would be appreciated

I believe the Ferrers family once owned Tamworth castle but this would be much earlier. I don't know much of the history. There is a Ferrers Road in the Bolehall area of Tamworth. I am not sure if this is the same family.

Hi Wendy Thanks There were 4 lots of Ferrers in the Midlands Tamworth Groby Chartley and Baddesley Clinton My research evolves around Baddesley Clinton but for a number of years Edward Ferrers and then Thomas Ferrers were living in Sutton . Trouble is on all the documents it just says Edward Ferrers or Thomas Ferrers of Sutton Coldfield to our research group, and believe me we have spent hours checking out various places in Sutton, that is the only address given.
I was just hoping that there might have been someone in the forum who knew Sutton Coldfield history who could help.

I have checked some books I have but sadly there is no reference to Ferrers. I hope someone finds something for you.

What fascinating room names. 1729 is a very early date so I expect the house is no longer about. The names of Mr Coplers Room, Mr Gibsons Room and Perkes gallery may give some clues. Sutton Coldfield had many large houses and still does, but I am not sure how many at this date. Also trying to narrow down the area of Sutton may help eg Boot Hill, Tudor Hill etc. Early maps just have locations not names. I do hope someone can come up with a brain-wave.

cazap - have you considered Ashfurlong House or Moor Hall - both very close to Ferrers Close in Sutton Coldfield?

Thats a good point Polly. I think there was an original Moor Hall house built where Moor Hall is now, although I am sure the original one was built by Bishop Vesey. I will have to go back to my library.
