The earliest record I have of my great grandfather is his army record of 1879 when he joined the Royal Artillery aged 19, so his birthdate would be around 1860 and he stated that his place of birth was Kings Norton. His next of kin was his father Henry Farmer (bricklayer/patent oven builder)who lived in Handsworth and he had two younger brothers called John and Harry. I have been unble to find birth or census records prior to 1879 to validate this information. In 1891, Charles married Harriet Moth in Hampshire and he died of T.B. in 1901, leaving Harriet with two small children, Howard Spencer Farmer and Winifred Marguerite Farmer. I really would appreciate any suggestions as to how I can move my research forward and find Charles Edward's birth certificate as despite many attempts with the births index, I have been unable to purchase a birth certificate that tallies with a father called Henry. I hope that there might be some new ideas out there as my previous thread in 2007 has left me still searching!!

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Have you looked at this birth registration?

Charles Edward Farmer Birth June 1865 Pershore, Hereford & Worcester, Worcestershire 6c 368

(I know the birth year isn't exactly correct)

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Thanks for your help, yes I have checked that one already

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

In the 1872 directory covering Handsworth there is a Henry Farmer ;
Farmer Hy. 5 Everton ter. Stamford rd

However the 1871 census doesn’t give any Farmer at Everton terrace, Stamford road (only one house so-described). I also checked other house for Farmer either side, in case the other ones were only listed under the road. So he either wasn’t in or had moved in after the census.

Re: Charles Edward Farmer.

I have a Charles Edward Farmer on my family tree, b around 1860. He had brothers Edward, George and Henry (my Grandfather, yes, I know - old, or what, but my dad was 30 years older than my mum) born: 1855, in Birmingham Warwickshire. His mum was Ellen Farmer and dad, is sketchy, probably a John Farmer? He also had sisters Clara and Ellen. If you need any more info, just yell!

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

There is an Ancestry tree with another possible child but nothing else I can find on Ancestry or Pilot

Births Sep 1894
Farmer Winifred Marguerite St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 469

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Wow, after all this time I had given up that anyone would reply with any information - so thank you very much! I would be very, very interested in any details you have of birth places, addresses, census information etc. We would be related if this all works out! Hoping you have more info :)

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Hi that is my Great Aunt Winifred, who I met once 50 years ago when she visited this country from Canada :)

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Pg1. is a pdf. Transcription:
Slough Lane Harborne Smethwick 1871

Ellen Farmer Head 35 born Salop Shropshire
Henry Farmer 16 brass polisher born Warwickshire Kings Norton
Edward Farmer 11 Brass polisher born Warwickshire Kings Norton

The Edward on my census is the one born approx. 1860 Middle name not shown here. Some research suggests that the Joseph on pg 2 was also known as charles joseph. Hope it helps, not too sure whether the family is the same one as yours.

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Thanks for that. I have looked at this same census entry myself many times and wondered whether it is my family! I had also noticed the 'Joseph' If I tell you that I have been looking for many years ( 20 in fact, well before computer databases!), but I wonder if I got sidetracked because Charles 'Edward' gave his father's name as Henry on his marriage certificate in 1891. Thinking about it though, when Charles joined up he signed his army papers with a X so presumably couldn't read or write. As I know from my present family, people are often called by different names to those on their birth certificate! I did find a marriage index for a John Henry Farmer in Birmingham in 1854/March so it is all looking more and more hopeful. What do you think?

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Possible! I have also have a much searched for 1861 census with a possible dad of John Famer for the above family. It would be easier for you, I think, If you could see the family tree. Is on Ancestry as Farmer/kirby/Austin tree. Have sketchy info. for the other brothers and sisters. Have searched and searched for my granddad, Henry, the first born and born in 1855. Would fit with the above marriage index. Know Henry was blacksmith and alive in 1901, but apparently not by 1911. He, apparently used 2 names. Is listed as 'Henry,' on 2 of his children's birth certificates and as 'william,' on some of his children's marriage certificates. Do you have any photographs? May be able to see family resemblances etc.

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Thanks for letting me look at your family tree on Ancestry. After so much searching for so long, I just have a good feeling about this family, right ages, right location. I'll get Charles' army record and marriage certificates out again this evening and have another look for any clues I may have missed. I'll also send you my email address to your inbox in order to send you what photos I have. Don't feel comfortable posting them on here. Wouldn't it be great if it is the right people!!

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

have sent you my email address, if you respond with yours I'll send you some info and photos :)

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Do you have a more recent Charles Sidney Farmer in your family tree? He married my aunt Lily (but she was called Kitty) and he was called Sid they married in Birmingham and he died in 1991 in Kidderminster where they lived. Sorry if there is no connection, but sometimes things are worth a try.
Many thanks.

Chris

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

Hi Chris,

Always worth a try!

The 'Smith,' in your username gives me reason for optomism too. as does the Sidney. I have a Flora Ada Humphreys who marries a George A. Smith in Lambeth, London in 1934. They must have had children that I'm finding hard to trace. Flora's Grandma was Maria Farmer. Flora would have also been very much connected to other family - Frank Holmes Farmer and Annie Marjorie Farmer, they are listed as living in Birmingham, Sparkbrook area of Aston in the early 20s, then move to Battersea/ Wandsworth area of London, living in Stormont Road until 1960s. If they had children a Sidney would most certainly have been used with the Farmer as Frank's step-dad/dad was Thomas Sydney Humphreys.

Hope these long-shots help.

Re: Charles Edward Farmer

I don't suppose you have twins Charles and Richard Farmer on your tree. Born 1947... I think October. They were at the same school as me Yenton Primary..(also known as Sir Josiah Masons Orphanage). Lived Erdington area and I believe brought up by an Aunt. Charles went on to Grammar school and Richard went to yet another of my schools - Pitmans College? Georgie
