FARMER ANN b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

skylark

Proud to be a Brummie !!
Hello folks, here is another of my clan who has done a bunk & evaded all my searches...can you spot her for me please ????

Ann Farmer b 18/02/1832 : Living @ 15 Thorp Street on the 1851 census aged 19 years, she was a milk seller ( living with her mother & step father & siblings) but she is not with them on later censuses so where did she go ??? I have not found a death for her so she possibly married...but again no marriage has jumped out at me. I would appreciate any help in tracing her...thank you.

Margaret.

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

Hello Margaret,

I had a look on Familysearch, there's a marriage for an Ann Farmer to John Coaten 0n 27th Oct 1851, at St Philip's Birmingham.

(My Nan was born in Thorp St. 1900, also other relatives were there much earlier too!! None of your names though.)

Hope this helps,
rosie.

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

Sorry Margaret, I have only got to 1853 with my Farmers - William marrying Ellen Chattaway.
Don't suppose they are connected to yours are they?

Hello Rosie & Brian....I am almost certain that I chased up the 1851 marriage & it was not my Ann...I do have a William Farmer (Anns brother) but he was only 15 in 1853...but he is also a missing link after 1851 when he was in the Blue Coat school....

Margaret.

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

Cheers Margaret - can't ever imagine my lot atending the Blue Coat School - ezxcept to stoke the boilers or such like!
Just re-checked, my William inow appears to be 1849

Obviously the poor cousins!

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

Hello Brian...do not think for one moment that being in the Blue Coat school way back then was easy...it was a charity school & my GtGtG/Mother had to go cap in hand to get her kids in there & according to the medical records I have found, they suffered from eye complaints & chillblains that were so infected that they were sent back home to get well...but at least they taught to read & write while there.

Cheers, Margaret.

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

Margaret, have found another potential marriage on familysearch, but can't match it on Ancestry, someone else may have more luck, the one on familysearch is for Ann Farmer to Edward Smallwood on 14/12/1852 in St Thomas parish, Birmingham, so date and place would fit, but can't see them on a quick look on 1861 - they could have emigrated I suppose?
Sue
Have now found marriage on Ancestry 6d 257, funny how it didn't show up when I searched with Ann Farmer, as I'm sure you did too!

Margaret, have now found deaths for both Ann, in Jan/Feb/Mar 1859 6d p36, then Edward in Apr/May/Jun 1859 6d p14, this would explain why they are not on 1861 census.
Hope this is your folks, let us know!
Sue

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

Thank you Sue...I just wish the ages were given for the 1859 deaths...trouble is there is an Edward/Ann Smallwood on the 1851 (elderly) & no sight of them on the 1861 so perhaps the deaths relate to them...I have found a death for an Ann Farmer in 1854...but again no age is given.... so back to square one !!!!

Thanks again,

Margaret.

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

skylark,
There was an Ann Farmer who married Edwin Hayes in 1851 who appears to fit with your Ann's age and place of birth.
In 1861 they were at 75 Highgate with daughter Ann age 8 and visitor Emma Stokes age 9.
In 1871 they were at Spring Cottage, Edgbaston Lane with children Ann E, 18, Alfred E, 8, Alexandria(h), 5 and Jessie M 10 months
In 1881 Ann was widowed and living at 118 Mary Street, Balsall Heath with children Lizzy (Anne E) 28, Alfred E 18, Ally (Alexandria(h)) 15 and Jessie 10. Also with 2 lodgers.
Maybe thats your missing Ann ?

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

That is looking interesting Lindyloo...I had tried to find all the Ann Farmers who had married between 1851 & 1861 with no success at all on FMP... But now that I had the address you gave on the 1861 I could see that they were under the name "harps" !!! I will certainly be chasing this couple up now ASAP thank you very much for your help, I do appreciate it.

Regards to you all,
Margaret.

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

Hi skylark,
Just to let you know in case you are unaware of the site, I usually use FreeBMD www.freebmd.org.uk first to search for births marriages and deaths and I use Ancestry and FMP to locate, cross check etc. Ancestry has the record as Hayes so I was able to go straight to the census image because I couldnt find it initially on FMP. I am fortunate to have both resources because the subs are bought for me as Birthday/Christmas presents :)
FreeBMD is easy to use and you can search by name, by name with variations, with date ranges and also places or counties. I selected Marriage then typed in Ann Farmer, 1851 -1861, and picked Warwickshire. Then I went through the results and listed the possibilities for Birmingham and Aston and then set about trying to locate a likely couple in the census..takes a bit of time but hopefully gets you there in the end
Hope that helps
Lindyloo

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

Lindyloo, thanks for the info re freeBMD, will have to try that! I too have an ancestry sub as a gift, but haven't managed FMP yet!
Margaret, hope this leads you down the right path!
Sue

Re: MISSING: ANN FARMER b 18/02/1832.....Help needed please

You're welcome Sue :) I think Ancestry does use the Free BMD indexes now but I still like to check it out first because the search is easy. Great that you get it as a gift too, hopefully you will get both in time.
