farley Elsie May

peggygirl

proper brummie kid
Would appreciate any help with anyone knowing of Elsie May Farley (my nan) b1906, i've tried several times to get her birth certificate, each time with no luck, the reference numbers were for a different Elsie May, I tried the fathers surname & that was incorrect as well, I've even sent for a certificate from GRO, but that came back with a different father altogether.

On her marriage certificate her father is down as Abraham Farley - Caster, she married Roland O'Neill 1928, all the O'Neill's lived in the Duddestion area, mainly Penn St.

According to the search records there are 4 elder siblings, Hannah 1885, Alice 1886, Ann Elizabeth 1891, Jane 1897. Then there is Florence who is a youngster 1905, then Elsie May 1906 died 1965. The two younger ones seem such a big jump in years from the elder siblings.

I just dont know where to look or do, to find her. The brick wall has hit me!! :chargrined::ambivalence::chargrined:

Please please please can anyone help???

Re: Lost nan farley

I notice that in 1911 she is shown born 1908. There also seem to be large age variations for the parents from 1901 to 1911.

Can I ask why you want the Certificate. Surely you can obtain the MMN from one of the other children?

I did once read an explanation of how, from the time that any BMD is registered at a 'local' office, to it being recorded at the GRO, it may have been copied from one list to another anything up to 6 times, there being scope for error at every stage.

I believe that if you can specify to the GRO, limiting factors, i.e. in this case, Father's forename (+ variants) Abraham/Abe, etc, and they are unable to find a matching record, then they will refund the fee.

Hope that helps.

Re: Lost nan farley

Hi Peggy

Could be a slightly wrong marriage certificate ?,,this seems to be throwing you down a wrong "tree" branch.
Forget the O,Neils for a little while as they seem fine from 1928, catch up later after concentrating on your Nan.
Did Elsie May Farley sign her own signature or did the Vicar mark X,, remember many couldn,t read/write then
so Farley,,may be Fairly ? or some other variant,, (Accents thicker in those days)
Vicars only write in what THEY hear so re-check everything then retry Ok
Others may assist, keep plugging ,,Cheers JohnY

Re: Lost nan farley

In the 1911 census,Elsie's age was given as 3,which then gives a birth year of 1907/1908.
Elsie's mother's maiden name was Moore.
Marriages Dec 1884
Abraham Farley Aston 6d 508
Rosina Moore Aston 6d 508

I can only see the one birth of an Elsie May registered in 1906, but there's also a registered death the same month
Births Dec 1906
Elsie May Farley Aston 6d 284
I can see no other Elsie's born locally, apart from one in 1908, Wolverhampton
Births Mar 1908
Elsie May Farley Wolverhampton 6b 620

There is an Edith May born 1908, Aston
Births Jun 1908
Edith May Farley Aston 6d 412
When ordering your next cert, I think you may be able to stipulate the father's name of Abraham Farley or mother's maiden name Moore, then if you've ordered the wrong one it's not sent out and your money is returned.
Do you have your nan's marriage cert? If so,what is her age on that?
Abraham and Rosina stated they had 10 children in 1911,7 of whom had died.

Re: Lost nan farley

Thanks for replying Ken, cant ask any of the children, all but one has passed over & i did ask my aunt but she hasnt got the details.
The Elsie born 1908 is in Wolverhampton, I was told she was born in Birmingham, the one with ref 6d 284 died the same year or year after, cant remember.
I want the certificate because she's family & I have certificates for all the other members of the O'Neill family, its just my grandads wife I dont have.

I did try GRO as you suggested, with & without fathers name. What is MMN?

Thanks for your info.....

Re: Lost nan farley

Sob! sob! thanks for your reply, but I have most of that info you have written down & i've tried with & without parents names, with no luck.

On her marriage certificate she was 22yrs they married 1928, fathers name Abraham Farley!! that would be correct wouldnt it? they wouldnt put
someone else on, like a grandparent or stepfather etc.
Its definately Elsie May again on the marriage certificate. The Wolverhampton one wouldnt apply to her as they were all born in Aston or Birmingham.

Thanks again for your help

Re: Lost nan farley

Hi John,
I've checked the marriage certificate, bless her she did sign it herself.

Thanks for replying.....

Re: Lost nan farley

One thing to bear in mind with birth registrations in the early 20th century is that some births were never registered, or birth dates adjusted to cover a late registration!
Also registration districts and boundaries etc change over the years. Handsworth springs to mind as an example.(Birmingham/West Brom/Staffs)
Would your nan have been baptised/christened do you think?
There may be church records that exist.
Have you considered applying for one of the siblings birth certs, maybe that of Florence?
The gap in the years between siblings may be attributed to childhood deaths, as from info on the 1911 only 3 out of their 10 children were still alive in 1911.
