I really need some help to establish my great-grandfather is the correct one on Familysearch. There are two John James listed for the correct year of birth according to the 1881 Census record, but apparently there could have been many more of them born in Halesowen during that year (1862). How can I find out my true great-grandfather, as certificates are no use because I don't know his date of birth, or even who his parents are for certain. I think I've found him, but really, it could be anyone. Does anyone know a way I can sort this out, please?

if you have a marriage for him you should send for the marriage cert which will show his fathers name and occupation. that always helps a lot!

Already sent for it, Shera but could do with his date of birth as there were so many Johns around at the time! Thanks for your help.

can you give the details of marriage then, ie names ,age and address on cert if given. fathers name and occupation

perhaps we may find him on a previous census. sorry if youve already tried this way, just trying to find a way round it

or if he had children and you know their names, look on a later census and see if you can tie in any details from that.but still won't give you a date of birth!
Good luck, Sue

Thanks, I have all the Census information and from that I know the year he was baptised, but that's not to say it was the year he was born, is it? Some people waited till their children were a few years old before they had them baptised. Besides that, he's on Famlysearch along with one other person of the same name, age and roughly the same area, but there could have been three or four or more of them who weren't listed on Familysearch! Help! I'm going to take myself down to Worcester soon to have a look at the proper Parish Records, I think. It's the only way to find him. The details, if you still want them are John James - born in Halesowen, baptised April 1826, married Sarah Green at St Thomas, Dudley in 1849 and moved to Ocker Hill, Tipton amongst a couple of other places. John worked with iron, a stocktaker when he married.

Thanks.

Harborne,
Just a thought, have you googled records for Halesowen births?
I did this for my great-great-grandfather who was also born in 1826, so before formal records were kept, and picked up a local history group for Blockley, where he was born and they supplied me with a whole parish history for the family.
May be worth a try!
Sue

Hi Sistersue

Yep, I've googled till I've gone google-eyed but have had no response. The trouble is, there are no actual births listed, but I've just had a thought, I think if I can find out when he died, isn't the birth date put on the Death Certificate? I've been that busy trying to find out more about his marriage and his birth, I never thought of his death record. Must try from that angle I think as I've contacted Worcs History Centre and they only have the Baptism records for that period of time, too. Meantime, I'll carry on googling. Thanks, Sue.
