elly

master brummie
Any ideas what a 'factors' porter did??

It's on my great grandad's birth certificate as his Dad's occupation (1884).

Thanks :)

Hello elly nice to see you back. Where you been since the year you started when I did and the same month. ?:)

Had a good look around ad the nearest I can get to it is Factory Porter, but when others spot your post they might know different

Hello Shera an Alf- I've not been far Alf- just gave the family tree stuff a rest for while. I'm now working part time so thought I'd give it another go, it's quite addictive once you get started!

Thanks both for your replies, I had thought it might be a factory porter but it's written in quotes: 'factors' porter. Not sure why?? thought it might be something more exciting than factory porter!! Hopefully somebody might know.
Thanks again

Addictive I should say so elly I haven't missed a day since I started 4 years ago.;)

You get lots of firms called XXX-motor factors, meaning they deal in spare parts for cars, vans etc. One online dictionary gives a definition :
factor - a businessman who buys or sells for another in exchange for a commission

Just a suggestion

mike

Factors could be a wholesaler who buy in items for onward sale.

Mike and Bernie you fab people! Thankyou so much, I think you're probably right.

Still not very exciting though is it!? Basically he was a fetcher and carrier for someone who bought or sold stuff

many thanks. H

Oh and another thought - In Scotland 'Factors' are people/companies that we might call down here 'Letting Agents'. Not that we are in Scotland but some word usage can change over time.
