I am trying to get information on the Hill family. I know that Frederick Hill lived at 28 Emery Close Erdington and owned a foundry along with Thomas Merris called Merris and Hill. I am also told that he possibly went into partnership with an Ernest Lees of E.G. Haulage and Co on the Slade Road. He might have had a daughter called Diana and I believe that her daughter is my Aunt.

Does anybody remember the Hill family? What happened to them? What happened to E.G.Lees & Co?

The only Haulage firm called Lees in the Erdington area that i remember was a brother of Ron Lees who owned Claribell coaches on the Aston Road.
I worked on Rons car (vauxall ventura) for one day in 1970 at Lees of Erdington before starting work for Ron as he had failed to tell his existing mechanic that i was taking his job.

I am EG’s granddaughter. Unfortunately we didn’t know him, he passed away when my father, his son was three. I wasn’t aware of Ron until we came across this article. We know very little of our family history. This small snippet of info is interesting. If anyone could help me further I’d appreciate it

The only info I have relates to Ron and that’s very little. Ron lived on Kingshurst and one of his Daughters was married to one of Rons Drivers named Vick Sharlot now deceased.

With that info Ron's easy to trace, b1912 Dordon, Warks son of Eli and Daisy (nee Oliver) Lees.

The connection to a brother Ernest is a little more uncertain. He appears to have had an elder illegitimate half brother George Ernest Oliver b1907, later re-registered (1932) as George Ernest Lees. Can't be certain this is the correct E G Lees.

I think we may need your father's name.

Thank you that’s very interesting. My father is also named Ernest George Lees. He was born in Birmingham in 1965. We are aware the family surname used to be Oliver-Lees until the Oliver was dropped at some point. My father also has a sister called Emma Lees. She was a baby when EG passed away. My Father has reconnected with some of EG’s daughters, there are several and they are much older than my father who is now 57. However there is still so much we don’t know.

It sounds as if it could be him then but still not totally certain.

A name of one of his elder sisters might help to confirm or not.

Further investigation appears to show Ernest George Lees married Polly Hewitt in 1930, he is listed as George E O Lees (I assume the O is Oliver).

They are listed at 147 Newtown Road on the 1939 register, as well as a daughter Dawn Barbara. Other daughters June Iris and Erna M.

Listed at 91 Upper Thomas St late 50s, early 60s.

He was born Dordon, which is not too far from Tamworth and that's his dob on 1939 register, so I would say yes.
