The 'then' pictures are taken from old postcards, the 'now' pictures taken from Google Streetview.
The older of the pictures is thought to date from the 1920's.

The 'Outer Circle' roads are denoted on the signpost as B4140, by the road numbering system introduced April 1923 (under the authority of section 17 (2) of the Ministry of Transport Act 1919), so the view must date after then.

It is interesting to pick out from these pictures what still remains from the early views!
