Engravers

Dolphie

master brummie
Wondering if I can pick someone's brain on here. One of my ancestors was an engraver, way back in 1851 (& onwards, all his life from the age of 13). He is listed in the 1851 census as a 'jeweller' & from then on its Master Engraver/Gun Engraver etc. I know someone in the family has a very tiny silver hinged table (about 3" tall or so) that apparently was this man's piece & we're talking about living & working in the Weaman St area.

Where can I find out more about apprentice stuff.......I presume he would have done an apprenticeship?? Would Central Library archives/local studies have this info?? Is there anything I can find online as I'm rarely in Brum??

Any advice much appreciated, ta for looking.:)
