Engine Tavern. Park Road. Norton St

I don't know for sure but opposite Norton Road there was a "Goods Shed" (on 1913 map) so it could have something to do with that.
Janice

On the c 1889 map below it was called the Railway tavern, probably because of its closeness to the railway goods terminus at Soho Pool (mentioned by pjmburns). Probably changed its name to distinguish it from all the others of the same name, but wanted to keep railway connection

Hi was Norton street the next street to Kent street north
If you go along park road Hockley, from along the flat
If so it was on the corner of park road and Norton street there was a railway bridge
Yards from it in Norton Street just yards from there along park road from the front of the pub
Was a huge ware house run by Chadwick's and a factory the ware house run by Ronnie
Chadwick whom owned also a scrap yard and area houses in Barford road
It was always packed by the locals on Sunday afternoons and nights
Just along from there was another pub on the opersite side of the road
Which was factory road and then the black eagle I think it was
Where the forum used to have meeting if Lynn can recall along there up to st Michaels hill
And Soho hill and Soho road
Kent street north was where Mcdougles flower manufacture or it was there ware housing
And a factory called Snelgroves
Best wishes Astonian,,,, Alan,,,,

Yes . It is still listed as theRailway Tavern in 1974, and from what Astoness says it is still there. Cannot find it as the Engine tavern. There is an Old Engine public house furthe up past the corner of Factory Road, opposite Berry St

mike where exactly is the old engine tavern on factory road??...i only know of the black eagle and the soho tavern corner of factory road/park road now fully refurbished and and call the new soho tavern..

lyn

Sorry Lyn, have corrected that, it was not on the corner put a little past the corner of park road and factory road, opposite Berry St, as shown below. Got mislead by Kellys missing out a large group of houses.

Edit: posts #1 and #2 copied to this new thread.

Next we have a later picture from the one on #1255, this is take in 1990 as opposed to 1989, but a lot changed in a year - this is Great Hampton Row, Nightingale Knitwear - the pub sign has been covered up and the ground floor has been covered in cladding - seems like they are doing well.
