Emmigration via Belfast

Mr Zippy

master brummie
Hi,

Not a Birmingham question as such, but it does relate to Birmingham people. Thought I would try this forum first.

I have discovered that the head of the family of my ancestors that emmigrated to Canada lived for at least two years in Belfast and other family members appear to have embarked on Atlantic crossings from there. Was there some benefit in living in Belfast, in terms of securing cheaper standby tickets where shipping lines wanted to fill ships?

Any ideas.

Thanks.

Pollypops, it appears they travelled a number of times between 1907 and 1914 before finally settling in Canada for good. It cant have been cheap doing this, so that is why I am speculating that living in Belfast was somehow advantageous.

Not long before my father died, he said that I should apply for dual citizenship and an Irish passport. The reason he gave was that, if I ever wanted to live in America, it would be easier as an Irish rather than a British national. I don't think this would be the same for Canada but maybe that was not the original intent. At the time Ireland should still have been a single state and part of the UK which would imply this was less meaningful. Then again, it could have been something to do with the war.
