Electoral Registers

Ewan

master brummie
Apart from a search at Birmingham Central Library is there any other way I would be able to search for a William Henry Cox, Birmingham in the 1860s and 1870s on an electoral register, ie on disc?

Many thanks
Ewan

Thanks for the reply, yes I have but I have not been able to find him, nor has anyone else in the past that has been trying to help find him for me. I thought perhaps he may show up on an electoral register.

Hi Ewan,

Searching on familysearch.org there are many entries for William Cox and William Henry Cox in Birmingham, Warwickshire
One entry is for the full name - location Birmingham, King Edward Road, b1874
Mispelling of surnames on census etc are common. A name I was searching for - Ilott was misread as Scott, Mott, & Slott, hope this website may help.

Hi Ewan

The earliest E-Roll for Brum online is 1912, there are no others, it would need someone to go to the library for the years you need info from and there are none to purchase on disc as far as i know. I would suggest you contact the library on the link below --

A slight correction there as the 1868 Burgess Rolls are online at

https://www.midlandshistoricaldata.org

Here's a brief description from their site:-

"List of the 14,000 voters eligible to vote in the Birmingham in the following wards - Ladywood, All Saints', Hampton, Saint George's, Saint Mary's, Saint Paul's, Market Hall, Saint Peter's, Saint Matthew's, Saint Thomas's, Edgbaston, Deritend and Bordesley and Duddeston-Cum-Nechells. Eligibility depended on a property qualification, and the list shows the address of the property which entitled the named individual to vote. An invaluable source between censuses. Kindly loaned to the project by the Birmingham and Midland Institute."

Essentially the Electoral Rolls as we know them didn't start until 1920.

Ewen:

I've just renewed my subscription to Midlands Historical Data, but the news is not good, though you can crosscheck against the census. In 1868 there was no William Henry COX listed. There are, however, four William COX entries for the following addresses (all houses):-

Newhall Street (no number)
12 Coventry Road
4 Braithwaite Road
Leopold Street (no number)

Hope that helps!

Thanks bren I wasn't sure whether the electorals would be on a disc or not, as it seems there are lots of other things on disc nowadays and thanks for the link.

Maurice, thank you also for looking up on the Midlands Historical Data one of the members on this board was able to find the same information as you did from the 1868. I was going to ask whether there were details available from this electoral roll of who might have been living at the same address as the William Cox from 4 Braithwaite Road and Leopold Street. I am familiar with the families from Coventry Road and Newhall Street, so if you are able to help with Braithwaite Road and Leopold Street I would be thankful.

Ewan:

Here is the page with those two guys on - no other information I'm afraid.

EDIT: I can tell you that in 1871, No. 4 Braithwaite Road was occupied by Robert William COX and his wife Ellen plus Mary JONES, a servant

Ewan:

In 1871 there were two COX households in Leopold Street:-

Daniel & his wife Mary with children John & Mary Ann

Martha COX, 24 & a widow, a licensed victualler, who had a brother Harvey HANCOX and a sister Annie HANCOX.

What you should also bear in mind is that the owner of a property does not necessarily live there - he could have been an absentee landlord!

Thanks Maurice for posting the information regarding Leopold Street and Braithwaite Road, much appreciated. That is the trouble with these electoral rolls there isn't much information with them. The lady of the house wouldn't of been mentioned nor would of course any children.

The seach goes on for this character I'm afraid, but again thanks for your help.
