It's been a while since I have been on here but I though people would appreciate the pictures I took today of the old Dudley Hippodrome that was later used by Gala Bingo until it closed down a few years back.

It is located virtually next door (on the same side of the road as) Dudley Zoo.

What a great set of pics', never been in as I live the other side of the city but been past it many times in my travels, just announced on the BBC Midlands Today news that the council have purchased it to pull down and give a totally uninterrupted view of the castle in a regeneration programme.

Marvellous photos thank you. So Dudley council have spent public money to dismantle a building to give an uninterrupted view of a derelict castle that sits so high it can be seen from miles. Im sure the residents of Dudley will be queuing to stand where the hippodrome once stood to admire the view.

I remember going to Dudley Hippodrome, as a boy with my father, to see Laurel & Hardy on stage. It must have been in the early 1950's.

They were great heroes of mine but, I have to say, they were a major disappointment to me in person. Obviously, they were beyond their prime, but I don't think a live, stage performance was their best medium - You couldn't pick up the knowing looks that you see in their films and they were beyond their more athletic slapstick routines.

I enjoyed much more, on a later visit, Dr Crock and the Crackpots - now they were real culture! Especially the tall coloured (drummer, I think,) who wore a bowler hat - but when he lifted it off his head, it was only the brim - the crown was his black short-cut hair.
