hi folks,,
has anyone any info on prospect row, duddeston and nechells. i have found another member of my family, john evans who was born in warwick 1791, in the 1841 census, it states that he lived at prospect row, but didnt give a number,..... strange.. not sure why.. looks like about 100 people lived in one house..
thanks to any replies...

I can offer you very little help regarding Prospect Row, other than to tell you that it was a short piece of main road that joined Coleshill St to Ashted Row.

As to why there would be up to 100 people registered at the same address I can only suggest that it was some sort of a working mans hostel as there were others in the area, although I have no knowledge of one on Prospect Row and the number of 100 sounds a bit excessive.

I knew an 'Evans' family, there was a David aged same as me son of the family next door to me at 5 cromwell st. We were mc dermotts. There was also Evans's their relatives that i passed on my way to St Vincents school in the 50's. they had an Uncle 'John' I think, who was a long distance driver who came to visit them one day. he parked his black car outside their house and everyone was looking at it. He had a short arm.

In answer to your message, I think the map I posted dates from about the mid 60's. You are right Belmont Row used to continue down where it met Lawley St at the junction of Curzon St and Vauxhall Rd.

The name of the Church in Belmont Row was St Peters Mission Church (I don't remember it either).

I also went to St Vincents 1954 -1957 I think, I hated it. Those penguins were vile nasty creatures.

Thanks Phil it,s a funny bit of map though i don,t think it,s drawn correctly it dosn,t show the canal and it shows Pitt St going as far as lawley St this would mean there would have been a bridge over it don,t remember that either but maybe iv,e forgotten it.Dek

I think it is a map that concerns itself more with streets and roads. The modern maps of today show the layout are more or less the same. The end of Belmont Row is cut off from where it used to meet with the traffic island at the junction I mentioned before.

Even todays Google map doesn't show the canal & locks, but on Google earth they can be plainly seen.
