Driving in the blitz

My dad drove a No 11 Outer Circle all through the war. He said that the worst thing was driving at night during the blackout - just two small crosses of light allowed to escape from the blacked-out headlamps of the bus, and on any other vehicles on the road. When air raid sirens sounded, the driver stopped the bus at the nearest public shelter, the conductor got everyone off and into the shelter until the all-clear sounded, when all out again, back on the bus and journey continued. He made it sound just ordinary....to me it sounded horrendous..
