Disused Railway Structures

Heartland

There are structures such as the Bordesley Viaduct (Trinity Street to Curzon Street) which no longer have railway tracks. With this Bordesley Viaduct the track that only ever covered part of the viaduct was used as part of the Goods Depot operation at the GWR Trinity Street depot. Those that pass by the structure will note recent repairs and the question to be asked is whom by?

Many disused railway structures in the UK have been since 2013 the responsibility of the Highways Agency and comprises the Historic Railway Estate. Presumably what remains of Bordesley Viaduct is part of that estate, but their website only mentions present work being undertaken.

But is that definitely true that only part was ever used , though obviously never for a through line. The 1880s map shows one trackm leading to the end. I suppose that this might of been to transport materials, but it apparently was used. Would not have been an attempt to forecast (incorrectly) what would occur, else there would be two tracks all the way.

Looking at maps such as these, they come some time after the building of the viaduct and the track arrangement at the Curzon Street end does need an explanation.

This is a view of the viaduct at the Curzon Street end

I have a recollection of some of this part being demolished in the 1990's
