Hi
Hoping for help with tracing Marjorie. She had a daughter at Ladywood hospital, Birmingham in 1910 and then disappeared.

She was born to Francis and Caroline Davis in Longborough, Glos. and had (we think) a twin brother named John Cyril Davis.

Her daughter was adopted and we cannot find Marjorie anywhere.
I am her great grandaughter.

All help very much appreciated.

Hi Chris

Many thanks for your kind efforts - I do have the info up until the last census, but Marjorie disappears after this. She had my Grandmother at Hope Lodge, Loveday Street OR Hope Lodge Maternity Hospital, 153 Ladwood Road in 1910 and this is the last we know of her. I do not know if she returned to Gloucestershire or stayed in Birmingham. Many other cousins were living in Birmingham at the time so it was possible if her family were less than pleased with her...poor thing!

Oh, for the 1911 census,eh?

It's almost certainly a different one, but might be worth checking. In the 1940 Kelly's
there is an entry at 67 Chestnut drive ,Erdington of a Misses Gwendoline and Marjorie
Davis

Thanks Mike,
I am new to post 1901 family history so at the risk of sounding a bit dense, how would I go about checking it all out? I appreciate your help.

BTW, noticed you were from Reading - Marjorie's daughter (my Grannie) ended up in Tilehurst, as did my Father and subsequently me. I know it very well indeed.

How long have you been in Reading?
All the best

You could look at the electoral roll over a few years to get some idea of how long they were there, and if they were preceded by another person with the same surname, and possibly find when they left /died? . Have you tredged through the death certificate indexes for heralready? If you do find possibles, then A
a death certificate would tell you where and when she was born. Of course details could be incorrect. I know of one modern instance in wolverhampton where a mother registered her daughters death and gave the wrong middle name.
In answer to your question I've been in reading since 1981. Total time in brum about 11 years, but originate from chichester in west sussex. now live on edge of fords farm

Re: Marjorie Davis b. 1892 orig.from Longborough

Thanks Mike. I will follow up your suggestions and appreciate your kind advice. I have looked at death register but not sure if she moved, married or changed her name (possible, as you say!) Lots to work on, anyway.

Do you know if there is any way of looking at the Kelly's for the area for early 1900's without actually buying the whole thing - I am guessing that the only real way is to go to the records office itself. I have seen other directorys for Glos. area on line and that are free to view. It seems it's up to the local area to decide whether they post it or not!

Re. Reading, I lived in Westwood Road in Tilehurst for many many years. Marjories daughter (my Grannie) married my Grandad, who was born in West Sussex (!), and they moved to Birmingham before buying Greenwood House in Reading which is still there and is located almost opposite the garage on the left on the Bath Road as you drive from Fords farm into reading (just before the turning at the roundabout that goes left up New Lane Hill. He ran Vincents garage for many years (having worked in Birmigham for the Midland red bus company). My Gran eventually lived in the Almshouses which are just behind Greenwood house on a little green there, just off New Lane Hill (opposite Fontwell Drive, where other family members still live!). For many years they owned the village pub in Brimpton as well.

Small World!

PS. I am also researching West Sussex area so any pointers there would be great!

Re: Marjorie Davis b. 1892 orig.from Longborough

Sorry, confusing....the Horncastle garage is on the right and Greenwood is on the left. Was two cottages, Grandad bought up the other and converted them into one big cottage. Hope that makes sense now!

Re: Marjorie Davis b. 1892 orig.from Longborough

A difficult one for you Floss.

I note from birth register 1892 that Marjorie was given no second name, searching is helped a little if the person has 2 names.

There are dozens if not hundreds of Marjorie Davis on the birth and marriage registers, she could have married in the years following 1910.

It would be like looking for a needle in a haystack so as you say the 1911 will be a bonus for you.

Was a bit confused about the garage at first. I live in underwood road, just town side of fords farm. i remember the almshouses as, when I first came to reading was driven around a bit by the estate agent and up that road was one of the first places he went. will look for greenwood house. It must be almost next to theHorncastle pub. don't like that pub and haven't been in it for 15 years or so.
what part of west sussex are you interested in?

Re: Marjorie Davis b. 1892 orig.from Longborough

Hi Mike
Never been in the Horncastle pub! Not likely to now ;) Anyway, Greenwood is well tucked back from the road on the left opposite the Horncastle garage (if it is still there). I haven't lived in Reading for 10 years so not really sure.

Thanks re. Marjorie. Will keep plugging away and see what I can find.

re. West Sussex - well, it's all connected to Birmingham of you look at my Richardson post. My G. Gran married in Aston and then they moved to Bognor, West Sussex where my german G.Grandfather was a hotel cook. My Grandfather was born there (he married Marjories daughter - my Gran). I am tryoing to trace the origins of my German Grandfather but having to work back from this country as records in Germany are a complete nightmare. My G.Gran moved back to Birmingham because my German G.Grandfather died aged 30 in 1909. I guess she wanted to be with her family again.

Anyway, trying to find out what he was doing in Bognor and why they moved there from Birmingham. All a bit odd.

Cheers
Floss.

Do you know where Fritz, (that's your g grandfather insn't it) was in bognor
The site https://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/pictures/index.html has a fair number of bognor pictures on it if you search. If he was living at a hotel as a cook, then you might get a picture of it there. At that time bognor was fairly flourishing as a resort, partly because Edward VII recuperated there (despite him apparently saying "Bugger Bognor"), so there probably would be a dmand for cooks, and he might have seen it as an opportunity to further his career in an up and coming place.

Re: Marjorie Davis b. 1892 orig.from Longborough

Hi Yes, I have details of my Grandfathers birth in Chapel Street and Fritz's death at Steynes Street. I looked at the link you sent but couldn't see them there sadly. What a great site though,,,,just spent a very decadent half an hour flicking through some great pictures.. Many thanks.

Better get back on to Josephine in Brum now I guess!

Many thanks indeed, I am sure that the site will come in very handy once I piece a little more info together.
