Darby & Whitcombe - Dudley

Brummie27

I am trying to find the grandparents of Walter Darby 1918. I found the maiden name of his mother as Whitcombe. But I am not finding anything for her birth or a marriage to a Darby. I am told by relatives that the wife/mother of Walter died and he remarried but I am stuck as I have not got the first name of either for sure. Some think its William and others Joseph and then the wife might be called Charlotte. But I am come up with nothing. Please can anyone advise?

hi was walter darby born in birmingham or was it actually dudley..any idea of his occupation...if you know his mothers maiden name i presume you have his birth cert? any extra info however small that you can supply may help us unravel the mystery

Hi - I don't have much to go on. I found Walter's birth on my family tree website and it shows his mothers maiden name there. I have checked with everyone I know and that is why I thought I'd try this forum. He was born 12th February. I have one line of Darby's already and want to see if they intermingle at some stage. But I haven't found a Walter amongst those. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I hope so as I am stuck. I will ask if anyone knows what he did for a living but its his parents that I am struggling to find. I know he died in 1990.

just looked on ancestry and there is a birth for a walter albert darby 12th feb 1918 dudley i take it this is he ?

There are a couple of other possibilities but the obvious answer is that his mother had been married before so Walter's parents marriage wouldn't be Darby/Whitcombe.

Purchasing his birth certificate would sort it out.

Is there a connection between him and the Mary A Tibbetts he is with on the 1939 register. There is a Tibbetts/Witcomb marriage in the Dudley in the 1870s.

As long as it is Walter Albert Darby you're looking for then I think I've solved it.

The Mary Ann Tibbetts he is with in 1939 is his grandmother. Her husband was Charles Albert Whitcombe Tibbetts b1871, d1925.

He was probably the son of Ebenezer Albert Tibbetts and Martha Maria Whitcombe, though he may have been Martha's illegitimate son. Their marriage and his birth are both registered Dec 1871, Dudley.

The confusion is that he is listed as Tibbetts and Whitcombe (or variations).

He marries Mary Ann Pritchard in 1895, listed as Whitcome. His death is listed as Tibbetts but his burial as Whitcombe.

His eldest daughter, Ruth b1896, was registered as Whitcome but when she married Benjamin Darby in 1914 she was listed as Tibbetts. She died in 1918 and Benjamin remarried in 1920 (Lily Portman).

As well as half siblings, Walter possibly had 2 brothers - Benjamin b1915 and Frank b & d 1916, both listed as Darby/Tibbetts.

Hello
Thank you for the info. Please can I be cheeky. Is it possible for you to send me the 1939 register info or let me know where they were living. Was it just Walter living with his grandparent.

Firstly thank you for the info. This is fantastic. I had completely lost hope of finding anything. I think I have got it now. It’s taken me all day and to be honest I didn’t fancy going out in the heat. So I’ve had a fan on me all day searching. I’ve found most of the people. So thank you for all your help.

It is just Walter and his grandmother listed and they are at 216 Pedmore Road in the Dudley district.
