Daily Mirror Writer

brumgum

Proud to be a Brummie!
My Gt Aunt who lived on Gem Street Gosta Green used to write articles of a political nature for the daily Mirror in the 30's and 40's, I'm at a loss as to how i could access some of her articles. She must have done quite well out of it as she purchased a sweet shop on Moland Street out of the proceeds. If anyone has an idea as to how i could go about finding her articles i'd be grateful to hear,
Brumgum.

Hi brumgum

Hope you keep us informed as to how you get on and sounds like some of these articles could be interesting, nice bit of history to have i should think, all the best with it

The Mirror contacted me today and gave me this pay for view site and it's possible to see the headline title to some of her stories such as "If I were King For The Day"....My father already has a cutting of this story but there are several on these pages...

Her name was Alice Hines-Randall.
I made a mishhtake!...The story my Dad has is "if i were king for the day" the story i can see here is "if i ran the country"......heavy stuff!,
PS i'm sorry about the lady in the bikini on this page and i've no idea how she got in on the act but that ain't my aunt for sure!.

Just an update on this, i've been reading the articles and they're excellent and everyone that's seen them says i should do something about getting a wider public to view them as they are such a great insight into life in the late thirties before the war. Subjects include my Aunt's trip to London and to a film studio, the mirror put her up in the Savoy!, A night out in Town (Brum), her experience of a convalescent home in Malvern, about being a bridesmaid and having to help her friend make everything and go to the wedding on a bus because no one had any money etc, a holiday in Blackpool. There are about 12 articles all together, HELP...what can i do with them?, i was thinking about Carl Chinn i bet he'd love them. What's the best way to get in touch?, what about copyright laws etc as the Mirror must still own them?, if anyone could help i'd be grateful,

Brumgum.

The Mirror Goup owns the Birmingham Mail as part of their regional papers so Carl should be able to get access - maybe even make a special out of it.

Brumgum I have sent you an IM. It sounds absolutly facinating and I for one would love to read the articles. I am sure Carl would be interested as this is Brummy history.:) Please let us know how tou get on.
