Crown Stores

I am curious about the name 'Stores' Initially I thought it unusual, however, I see there was another M&B Crown Stores in Ladywood - corner of Ruston Street and Morville Street. (A photo of it can be seen on Mac Joseph's Old Ladywood web site).
 
There were a number of "Stores around Birmingham, usually just off licences, but I think at least one (can't remember which ) was a proper on licence pub (beerhouse)
