Crown & Anchor pub, Gem Street, Aston

Hi Colin

Have you tried entering the name of the pub in the search engine for the forum at the top right of the page you will find a few mentions of the pub, but so far no photos.

The pub was situated on the corner of Gem Street and Ryder Street (see attached map) and was known to the locals as "The Bunch" for some unknown reason. The pub remained in business until the University expanded in the early 70's when it disappeared.

Phil,

I must admit that that was my first thought too, but I tried it and I found no information worth linking to. I didn't find a photo of the pub either. Strange kink in the building line on that side of Ryder Street too.

Originally the pub was street fronting on then what was part of Lawrence street and later renamed Ryder Street. Though it looks like early sometime in the early 1900's there was a remodelling of the pub and the part fronting Lawrence Street was demolished. The attached 1898 map shows the pub as it was.

Phil,

Thanks for that. Was the new building line the result of Brum's first 22 Council houses referred to here:-
in the link posted by user Louisa in post #46 on the Gosta Green thread?

According to that report, Ryder Street was originally Tanter Street in Area 5 of the Report, and whilst there are a few interesting pictures at the end of the Report, including one of Ryder Street, they don't appear to include the Crown & Anchor.
