Can anyone tell me what a cooper's job consisted of circa 1839? Was it delivering barrels of beer?

Thanks for that, Crom. I don't suppose you would know whether it was a very lucrative job? The ancestor I'm thinking of was quite wealthy I think but I don't know if he brought his money with him from Ireland and I'm trying to find that out.
 
Be job like a Blacksmith or Thatcher took a while to learn but it was not well paid ...
