Hi folks

New to this list but you all seem quite nice.

Could someone look up the marriage at St Martin's for John Cookson and Sarah Divet 14 Nov 1803, please?

I've been told these are my ancestors, but am not sure as John's name should be CUCKSON and they seem a long way from home. (Notts)

Any and all information would be most gratefully received.

Many thanks

Joan

Hello Joan, sadly these early records are just lists of names with no other info. The entry is clearly John Cookson and Sarah Divet. I wouldn't discount it though as often people couldn't read or write and wouldn't know if their name was written correctly. Also accents played a big part in names written incorrectly. I hope this helps.:)

Hi Wendy

Thankyou very much for taking the trouble to look up the marriage and reply.

I realise that before 1812 there wasn't the need for signatures etc. I was really just hoping that they would have given the participants parish of residence. I suppose it just depends on the incumbent. Some do and some don't.

I won't discount it, but it will go into the 'pending' file.

Many thanks,
Joan

Joan have you seen this on the IGI Pedigree Resource File , note the spelling.

Many thanks for this Chris.

I haven't seen this on Family Search but I have seen the same tree on Ancestry submitted by at least 2 other people.

My John Cuckson married Sarah ?somebody about 1803 and they had their children baptised at Austerfield on the Notts/Yorks border.

Since I submitted my query I have discovered that 'my' Sarah Cuckson was a widow in the 1851 census and gives her birthplace as Carlton, Notts. She died in 1856 so I can't look at more recent censuses.

It would seem that Sarah Divet's (the bride in previous posts) birthplace is Meriden, Warwicks,(1788) with 'her' John Cookson/Kuckson also born there. So they tie in with each other.

I have no idea where 'my' John Cuckson was born - no baptisms, marriages or burials and I am thinking he died before 1841. Sarah was living her son in the 1841 census.

I suspect that someone has linked this marriage into 'assumed' descendants without actually doing enough research:rolleyes:

Is it possible that anyone could tell me if John Cookson/Cuckson/Kuckson and his wife Sarah had any children baptised in St Martins in the few years following their marriage there? If they did, then I think I can discount this marriage as being the one I am seeking.

Or can anyone find them on the 1841/51 censuses? If they were living in the Birmingham area they can't have been in Notts !! Should I ask this question on a different thread?

Many thanks to all who've replied. I really appreciate your help.

Joan

It should be ok left on here for now Joan...
Sorry I wasn't more help but it does seem that someone has mixed the two families up.
